tansteve, you asked this same (or similar) question a few days ago. We would love to answer it for you, but each area has its own set of variables that would need to be factored in.
When we started researching this business we found one area to be so different from another that you can't comfortably apply the same numbers everywhere (we are in a large metro city). The clientele, price structure, tanning habits, and competitors vary from downtown to the suburbs. Wish we could be more helpful, but good luck with your research. |

This is a middle class suburbs most homes about $300,000. Population of 20,000 in five mile raduis. One hair salon with (5)older 30 bulb, 20 minute beds across the street, $5.00 per session $40.00 per month. 7 Miles away is a (25) bed salon with combination of equipment including high pressure 7 min and 12 min beds, stand up units and normal 20 min beds. They charge between $7.00 and $14.00 per sesson and their least expensive package is $49.99 per month. What other information is needed to project potential monthly tanners to project gross sales in a average month? Any help appreciated Thanks,
Tan steve |

Sounds like a good spot to set up shop. Hair salon probably wouldn't hurt you a bit. Suburbs tend to not sell many single sessions except when college kids are home. I would sell monthly packages and 10, 20, 30 etc session packages with longer expirations (and slightly higher price) for those unable to be locked in to 30 day pkg. Don't compete with $5 session prices either, I am assuming you will have newer, better equipment, price yourself accordingly. They should pay for lotion education and other amenities the hair salon doesn't offer. The salon 7 miles away isn't a threat either, but I would tan on their equipment and decide accordingly. Go with something different, of course.
Sorry I can't be more specific with numbers, sounds like you are trying to do a business plan, and we never did one. We purchased an existing salon that was very mismanaged and almost run in to the ground. We cleaned, painted, and raised prices slowly and still are told we are the best and cheap considering how much better our equipment is. We are in a suburb with 4 competitors within 4 miles. Good luck and use the search feature to find business plan, demographic info, etc. Lots of good information and smart people here to help you... |
