NO MORE DOORMAT

I am a new salon owner as of 08/01/01. Things were a little slow when I first started and I have really learned some valuable lessons. I am really grateful it was during the slow times that I made some of my biggest mistakes,.had it been busier, my little problems could have been huge.. I have learned so much from these message boards. I've been a little "gun-shy" to post because I have this small character defect called being a "people pleaser." BAD, Bad thing to have when owning a business I'm finding out. Here's a stupid thing I did.....Man comes in with his son, said" they were going to Hawaii in Jan. and wanted to buy packages for him, his son and wife. It was the last day I was running the buy a unlimited package and get a free lotion promo. I told him if he called me back today, I would still honor the lotion deal. to make a short story long,..he came in , bought his son 1 unlimited package(gave free lotion). The next 2 times he came in when his son tanned, sat and told me how the "wife works retail and would only be able to tan 3-4 times before they left and could they both tan on one unlimited?" I said, "sure if she is only tanning 3-4 times, they could share a package. Well, ladies and gentlemen, she has been in here 3 times this week already. My husband called them on it last night and Mr. Miser called my husband every **%$##@% name he could think of and hung up on him. He told us "we were never going to make it and he was cancelling his check, etc, etc, etc. "
I let this guy live in my head all night. Valuable lesson for me #1 This is a business not "Let's make a deal" for any sale. #2 not everybody is going to like us and we are not going to please everyone. #3 conflicts will happen, get over it. Whew, glad that's over. I'm learning! Thanks for all your helpful posts in the past! Beach Bum

Welcome aboard Beach Bum. I know what you mean, for real. I too was and still am a pushover sometimes. I am learning to be harder but it is tough on me. I am like you say a doormat and people pleaser. I want your business so I will just lay down and let you stomp on me. Well I am getting tougher and this board has helped. Don't be a stanger now that you have broken the ice. Join us in the chat on Thurs. nights at 9 central.

Congrats Beach Bum, you are on your way! We have all been in a similar situation to yours I'm sure. I think the hardest part for me too when we first opened was the conflict. Some people get so darn mad soemtimes! BUT we've got to learn to deal with and to ignore it sometimes too. Don't take it home with you if at all possible, leave it at work and try to take some time for peace of mind.
