Do most salons make appointments, or does it really matter? It really depends on how many beds you have. I would suggest doing both. Take appointments and accept walk ins. |

Hello everyone!
My name is Kim and I am opening a new salon ... my first salon... in a few weeks. This boards has had many helpful tips, ideas and just a lot of stuff I never even thought about! I love the no appt necessary and am planning on running my salon this way. I will only tan at shops with this policy... why have your bed laying dormant waiting on a customer when you have someone there wanting the bed! Thanks for the help and I am sure we will all get to know each other soon:) |

Ok, sorry, I forgot to answer the question. Dah..........
I take appointments. My customers love it. They know that they don't have to wait for a bed to open up. In this busy world where everyone is in a hurry, seems to work for me. I'm the only salon in town that does appointments. I do keep a bed open for walk-ins too. |

We book appt. and "Walk-ins are Welcome". During busy season I post signs that read: Appt. not canceled 2 hours in advance will be charged visit.
Also, if they are 10 min. late they lose 10 min. tanning time. Certainly, there are exceptions. We take into consideration how many times they've been late, bad weather, car accidents which usually generates traffic, etc. etc. On occasion we can squeeze a tanner in. Some are just delighted to be inside the salon and will wait until something is open. I'm open for other suggestions/opinions. K-tina |

My salons have 16,13 and 13 beds. No appointments--strictly walk-ins. Has worked wonderfully,,even during season when you have 10 people in your lobby they don't mind the wait and it gives me the opportunity to do a mini lotion seminar. All of my salons do over 30% of gross sales in lotion so I think the whole plan works.

I'm surprised to learn a large majority of salons DO NOT book appts.
I'm interested in this topic. Here's a few questions: How do you deal with 4 customers walking in simultaneously for the same bed? Do you write down the next persons name and tell them it will be 1, 2 hours? If so, technically you make appts. What happens if they leave and are late returning? How do transition from appts. to walk-ins only? Any irrate customers? My appt. book is like my wallet. I can't imagine functioning without it. :0) In my opinion this system would work in a larger salon. Does anyone have 8 beds or less using this system? Thanks for your feedback. K-tina |

We have 7 beds and do walk-ins only. The longest wait we have is about 20 minutes. In fact, this past Saturday, I had three people with a 20 minute wait. They don't mind. It does come in handy when the ones waiting are non-lotion users. That's when I turn on the tv and plop in the JA educational video.

I also have 7 beds, but during busy season last year I took appointmens for 1 20 minute bed & 1 15 minute bed & the rest were walk-ins. I'd much rather have just walk-ins. It is much easier. But, for the one's on a schedule & need that appointment it's available. The bad part is when you have 2 or 3 that come together & all want an appointment when I don't offer it that way.
Hopefully, this year more people will use my superbeds & free up the regular beds more. |
