I will have a 10 bed salon. Do any of you who have not had appointments feel you must have a certain number of beds before you can operate on a no appt. basis?I have always planned to have "no appts." but got to thinking about this??Kathy

I have 7 beds (5 100watt regular beds & 1 VHR booth & 1 VHR bed). I do walk-ins only right now. Last year for my first busy season people were having to wait so long I did a poll & asked who wanted appointments & who wanted walk-ins. It was probably 80% did not want appointments. When someone told me they had waited an hour one night, I felt I should offer an option. I started taking appointments for 2 of my regular beds & left the rest for walk-ins. I would've preferred to leave it as walk-ins. It made it more confusing & I know of at least one person that quit tanning with me because I started taking appointments. Of course the more beds you have you shouldn't have as much of a problem with walk-ins. I'd have my VHR's sitting empty & everyone waiting on regular beds. Hopefully, I can do a better job at promoting the VHRs & getting people to upgrade to these beds more often.

No appointments, except for Hi Pressure equipment. No shows are charged for the full session regardless of whether I find a replacement or not - no questions asked. If client has a problem with that s/he can hit the road - it was explained to them when they joined and when they bought HiP packages.I know that sounds harsh - and unappreciative. However, I have been burned to the max with appointments/no shows and has hurt business. The appointment BS is over.

Has anyone ever changed from appointments to walkin only? My salon has been here for 8 years before I took it over and now have 12 years of doing appt. I am nervous bout changing to walk in only but really want to. What do you think the smoothest way to do this would be?

Hey Everyone I started day 1 with no appt policy was the first in my area but noticed that it catches the working people.(disposable income) It took some time for the members to not call and try to make appts. during the busy season I give the busy time frame to everyone and that has dispursed the busy time right to my close time keeping every bed going I like no appts I feel that people dont use the salon as much for they are not pressured to make an appt time. Good For Us they keep paying and not tanning as much.

Mitzi: One thing I did when I purchased my salon from the previous owner was to give out a customer questionnaire. I wanted to get an idea from the customers what they liked/disliked about the salon and what products they were interested in.This salon had been no appointment required prior to my purchasing it, but the #l comment that was put on all the questionnaires was ..."don't want to have to make an appointment"Maybe you could do a questionnaire and see how your customer base feels.I have a few ladies that want to tan on their lunch break and they will call me a few minutes ahead to see if there is a bed open. Since it only takes them 2-5 minutes to get here, I will close the door of the room that they prefer.I have a copy of the customer questionnair if you would like for me to send it to you privately.Melissa

Thanks Melissa, I would appreciate the form you used. I mostly was worried bout the lunch crown, I have lots of office ladies that want to run in at lunch. They are on a limited time slot and I want to make it easy for them. Just am tormenting my brain on this call.
