Just took over a salon that has been open for two years. Great location, good client base, little competition, working on cleaning up and streamlining a bit: our problem is that the previous owner has been too lax in a few areas and has me in a precarious position with some of the members. 1) Hasn't been following the 24 hr rule. Members are surprised by this and younger ones are filling up the lobby midafternoon as a hangout. Guess it's more chic than the community swimming pool and they are out of Mom's hair. Makes me look busy from the outside, but...there is no money changing hands in this picture.2) Has been selling special packages but not entering into the computer correctly so expiration warning box comes up and have to manually set timer. This requires unplugging and repplugging in Tmaxx and setting time. Really need help with this one, very uncomfortable doing this. Don't have instruction book, gotta be another way to set manually. Former employee says there should just be button pushing but can't explain further.3) Handful of "special" clients of previous owner get miffed because I won't give same discount; half price on super bed? Checking their history, they have spent very little and used much! Not cool!4) Unbelievably huge inventory of dead lotion. Have moved a little by going half price but afraid of selling something that's "gone bad". How do you tell when lotion should be discarded? Smell? Texture?5) Hasn't been skin-typing, been placing fair skinned clients in hottest bed for max time, "wanna tingle"?, etc. I see this one as an opportunity, but cringed when I heard "you need to burn a little at first, then you'll see a tan..." aaarrrrrrggggg! Overall, this shop is a great opportunity, just getting frustrated with the incompetency of the past...we do have many customers that tan smart due to their own efforts of learning how to do it right. I know I will lose a few but eventually get it on track. I uncover more sh** everyday, thanks for listening!

Question:24 Hour Rule...Does this mean if someone tans at, say, 8 pm Tuesday and they want to tan at 4 pm the next day, is that considered too soon? (Assuming a person with a decent base tan...) 9

Texas says once every 24 hours; spent 3 hours with the health department Thursday morning going over EVERYTHING (phone call from a competitor initiated the inspection). Luckily for us we did not get cited for anything, but did have to go over client list/histories and inspector had me print out 3 violations by previous owner. I assume they plan on taking action but I couldn't tell you what that could be. Personally, I agree with the law so have no problem enforcing it. From a business stand point, why fill up your beds all day long with people trying to "get their money's worth"? As we all know this is not the smart way to tan anyway. The few customers I may lose over this certainly aren't worth the risk of losing everything we have put into this venture.I was in the culinary field for a while and was horrified by some of the things I saw, left because I work "too clean" which makes you work more slowly. I have been through a health inspection in that enviroment, and passed spotlessly, so to speak. BTW, inspector mentioned that a 48 hour law is being considered at present.

Sorry I rambled so much: if you tan at 8 pm Tuesday, you cannot tan until after 8 pm Wednesday.

Remember you are in control of your salon. No matter what the previous owner did, you must make things right for you and your salon. Those that got special treatment will eventually see you are improving the standards. If they don't, it will be their loss.
