Re: How did you learn to airbrush tan?

Been spraying clients for 10 years. I joined a airbrush talk forum. read ...read...read more from the "pros".
Then practiced on friends and relatives..ALOT!
But like said... it is so much more then just a gun in hand and machine!

Its like everything else. I use the Nike model--Just Do It. Or, now I should say just did it. Its simple. 10,000 people later....why complicate everything???

Smile Re: How did you learn to airbrush tan?

Great question! Like others have said here it began with plenty of research. I had always self-tanned and had purchased a consumer airbrush tanning unit and a tan tent AFTER I turned my white bathroom bronze . I watched a ridiculous amount of youtube videos. It was ultimately Sheryl Bingham who started Tanning Central who really inspired me and made it seem possible.

Others that were already doing it successfully helped like Elle the founder of Envy Tan, Abi O, Sjolie and Dante from Beach Bum. I received a certificate from Norvell, had a hands on session with FabuLIZ (now with VS) and bought a "How to" DVD from Tanning Central all were helpful in their own way. Nothing however replaces hands on experience but all the other stuff really helps prepare for that first.

Never stop learning and building on skills some are lucky and have a talent but like anything it requires practice and patience. I often think that spray tanning is like movie special effects if done well no one notices your "tan" just how amazing you look.

I developed my own style now that I've sprayed 7000 bodies I often think of better methods!
I also contour every single client to match their body type and what will look best on them.
Good afternoon, Hey, Ive seen you post on the other tops for UV tanning so thought I would reach out to you. Iowa is getting ready to ban 18 yearolds so need to be ready with spray tanning . What brand do you use? I also do not think the look of the "tent" is what I want for my space so I'm looking at the Sunless Arena and Colosseum from Norvell. Any suggestions?

More recently I took a basic certification course just to see if there was any new info or spray techniques. What I have found is that no one really teaches you how to tan someone who may be older and have lots of wrinkles, extra skin or on the heavier side. Trial and error have really helped me throughout the years. Most of my clients tend to be older and aren't Size 2!! It would be nice to see a company teach techniques on every size, shape and age:)
GlowByDawn you are SO RIGHT!!

Any video on youtube or instructional "How to Tan" video or even hands on training features a "model" which is great BUT not entirely realistic. So when you eventually have clients with skin conditions, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, body hair on men and all the other stuff you mentioned it can be a real challenge.

It would be great to have dealt with those things before you find yourself with a paying client. I've even found issues are created from certain tan poses that with some people are absolutely fine.

I just saw an upcoming hands on course that deals with troubleshooting but geared towards fitness competitions so I doubt that will be helpful for wrinkles and weight. We'll see.

Re: How did you learn to airbrush tan?

Being able to spray tan more "challenging" body shapes is something we teach in our advanced spray tan courses. You need to be able to spray tan the perfect, young body first so really it's not a beginner thing. Getting to grips with spray tanning on a basic level can be overwhelming, so get a lot of easy spray tans under your belt first and then see if you can learn from a more experienced sprayer who's willing to pass the info on or find yourself an advanced class. One of the biggest issues is making sure your client is made to feel comfortable with the sometimes strange angles and poses you might be asking her to make. She may well feel awkward about her size in general or her large bosoms or whatever her foible is (we all have these hangups) the last thing we want to do as professionals is make her feel uncomfortable. I spray tan a lady who's over 80 and all I can say is if I'm still partying at her age I'll be very happy. I must say though her class of partying is a very grand English Garden Party!

It would be great to have your advanced course available on DVD. I just do not find there are enough people in my area offering advanced hands on techniques. :)

Re: How did you learn to airbrush tan?

When I purchases my LVCLP Airbrush Tanning unit I also ordered the training DVD. It had detailed instructions with examples of how to spray 3 different bodies. Very informative.
