Red face How did you learn to airbrush tan?

Hi! I'm interested in finding out how you learned to tan. Did you learn by working in a salon? Did you watch a demo at an industry show? Were you trained by a product company? Did you watch videos (youtube, did you buy one? Can anyone recommend any good resources online for learning?

Re: How did you learn to airbrush tan?

I have 23 years of experience in airbrush in arts. Spray tanning came second hand to me. Working in a salon, thats where I learned about the body's skin. Now I train those who want to learn spray tanning .

Re: How did you learn to airbrush tan?

I started by researching first. It took me two years to finally decide to offer the service. I was excited to get started so I started spraying the day I got my machine before getting instructions. I took some classes later to see if I missed anything and I watched many youtube and company videos. That being said I don't spray the same as any of them. I developed my own style now that I've sprayed 7000 bodies I often think of better methods!
I also contour every single client to match their body type and what will look best on them.

Re: How did you learn to airbrush tan?

Yes researching is very important. Here is California many people think airbrush spray tanning is easy and all they need to do is buy a machine and solution . There is much more to spray tanning than just a machine and solution .

Re: How did you learn to airbrush tan?

Learned how to use the machine with the DVD it came with. Changed just about everything that the DVD told me to do as I practiced and realized how flawed it was. It took me 6 months to feel confident enough to start charging people. That was almost 8 years ago. I don't think watching demonstrations will teach you technique but it will teach you basics. You need to have the gun in your hands and practice.

Remember....along with having a gun in your hand and practice also requires a technique.

Got my start spraying cardboard. Learned distance and pressures that way. Also used the dha free to start spraying actual people.

Re: How did you learn to airbrush tan?

I learned a lot through forums initially and then took a course. The training was awful and so I basically taught myself. I teach others in the UK and I am sometimes appalled at the lack of knowledge within the industry. There are some good companies doing training but equally some of the really big brands are quite awful which all adds to the bad name spray tanning sometimes gets. I always tell my students to follow the methodical approach I teach but then as they grow in confidence and knowledge they should develop their own method.

Re: How did you learn to airbrush tan?

I started by taking a hands on class in 2004 but it was really basic and I still had a long way to go. I found someone local that allowed me to record her spraying me because I was having issues with the hands and feet. She really helped a lot! More recently I took a basic certification course just to see if there was any new info or spray techniques. What I have found is that no one really teaches you how to tan someone who may be older and have lots of wrinkles, extra skin or on the heavier side. Trial and error have really helped me throughout the years. Most of my clients tend to be older and aren't Size 2!! It would be nice to see a company teach techniques on every size, shape and age:)
