Moisturizing and Spray Tanning

Question: What moisturizers should not be used before spray tanning ?

Everyone doing spray tans knows (or should know) that moisturizers and other skincare products can effect a spray tan by creating a barrier between the spray and the skin. Obviously, the thicker they are, the more dramatically they might effect your tan if you put them on beforehand.

There are ways around it, but what I want to learn is what you have found about various moisturizers and how little/how much they have effected your spray tan .

Thanks, and spray on!

For instance: House of Tan has found that Dove's creams, while highly acclaimed, are actually too creamy and thick. I imagine that this not only could block a spray tan , but also could cause streaking.

Re: Moisturizing and Spray Tanning

I found a pretty interesting article about what kinds of moisturizers should work best with different types of skin:

We ask our clients before each sunless session if they have applied any moisturizers after their last shower. If so, we have them use an exfoliating cloth before their session. The only product that can be applied before a sunless session that will not negatively impact it is an intensifier or maximizer specifically designed to enhance the results of a sunless tan. Examples are SunlessPRO Intensifier and California Tan Maximizer, but just about every sunless company has a similar product available.

Why do you feel that is a true statement?

Hi Concept,

While I applaud your use of exfoliating scrubs and knowing that your clients' skin needs to be as healthy and fresh as possible, unfortunately I think you may be purchasing snake oil with those intensifiers and maximizers.

I've looked up ingredient lists and have gone over them with our bio-chemist, Gary, and he couldn't find anything that would react in a way that would deepen a spray tan 's color or extend the effect.

That being said, we only went over a few and they weren't the ones you mentioned so yours could be different.

Have you tried a little trial and error? Like spray tanning without them or one arm with and one arm without? What were the results?

I tell all my clients not to use any shower gels or lotions which make the claim "moisturising" on their label. Dove without doubt is a pain in the ***, but I've seen it with a lot of other products such as Original Source products here in the UK. It's easier to mention it this way to clients because if you don't they want to know the specific brand names of products to avoid. All these cheap £1 shower gels in my opinion should be avoided before a sunless tan.

Thanks Angelina, very good point about the moisturizing claim. For me, the point of taking a shower is to take stuff "off" my skin--I'd rather be the judge of what then goes back "on" instead of my shower gel!

Re: Moisturizing and Spray Tanning

I am using the Norvell Auto Revolution with the Clear or Venetian solution . very good results. I tell all my clients..exfoliate before. and no make up, moistuizer, deodorant, perfume and shave before..i have them use the Norvell PH balancer right before and have not had one complaint..The Norvell solutions have moisturizers in it.. So to be on the safe side tell them to come bare bones..
