Re: Spray tan won't come off

As a response to Brain:

25,000+ spray tans to date and we have always had most of our customers use moisturizer (diluted) prior to a spray tan. We are a top reviewed salon in our market and have near 100% positive feedback after 9 years.

If you use a quality product (higher grade DHA); there should be no concern.

Side note: Sure, Dove extra creamy @ full strength would be bad, that is why you have the client dilute it.

Simply not true and can easily be proven false. I get what you are saying, but that statement is misleading the way it is written.

Re: Spray tan won't come off

BTW: It should be noted that I am not saying anything bad about any brand. I am sure that Aviva is on top of this and thus uses quality raw ingredients.

I personally feel that the "don't use lotion prior to a spray tan” is a left over from the older solutions that did not absorb as quickly as the new solutions do.

We have sprayed with various test areas on the body and checked the outcome. It really is no big deal anymore.

That said, we very much dislike Dove "creamy" stuff, not good at all.

If you spray, run some tests in house and see for yourself what products do what.

House of Tan,

Firstly--Congratulations on so many successful tans!
My main concern in regards to the moisturizing before a spray tan was that it would block the tan because it is putting something on the skin to act as a barrier--it's great that you have found a technique that seems to work and I encourage you to keep that technique (If it's not broke, don't fix it). I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of your results also!

Maybe instead of us talking about the possibilities of creating a barrier, we can create a thread and ask everyone what moisturizers definitely should not be used before spray tanning (as you said: the Creaminess of Dove is really bad--obviously there will be others that are bad as well).
--I think that this would greatly help other spray tanners out there, and ensure that their clients are satisfied (and not sabotaging their own tans).

Yes, we spray, test products and moisturizers--we also use everything we learn when we manufacture our solution .
--We actually are in the process of creating consumer reports about everything from oils/alcohols in moisturizers to spray tents vs. backdrops--anything we can think of that would help "get the word out".

I understand your sentiment: I should have written "That putting moisturizers on your skin before a tan "Could" affect the tan.

As you said, you've developed a technique that has been working great for 9 years (awesome!), but certain moisturizers could definitely stop a tan from setting properly.

Very good idea

In a perfect world all spray tan clients would use the products we sell in-house. However...

So a list of what to use or avoid would be of benefit to operators so they can at least give the best "drug-store" options for lotions and body wash.

Re: Spray tan won't come off

So far for us when it comes to body wash the only “drug-store” brand we like is Simply Ivory or Simply Ivory w/ aloe.

For body lotions, they pretty much all impede to some degree unless diluted down about 50/50 with water; diluting is the key.

In my experiences, the chances of issues after a spray tan are greater with dry skin vs. moisturized skin. That said, since most spray solutions no longer have alcohol in them, and are now loaded with aloe & lanolin; as long as someone comes straight from a shower, there really should be no reason for a person to have to moisturize (as you have mentioned).

However in a dry skin case, I personally would not risk it.

It should be noted that all I (we) do is spray tanning and thus we have very specific scripts for when a new client calls in. We use these scripts to make sure we give the client specific instructions for their preparation prior to coming in. We also do not take walk-ins for new clients; you get one shot to win a new client over, make it the best experience possible.

Re: Spray tan won't come off

Why risk poor results by using a moisturizer before the session? Sure, it might work, but, then again, it might also result in splotchy, lighter than desired results. Our clients with dry skin apply a pre-tan intensifier (SunlessPRO Intensifier is a favorite, but most sunless brands carry one.) That way, you get both moisturizing and a guaranteed flawless result, all in one.

My thoughts exactly--I can understand why a client doesn't want to buy an expensive moisturizer : I know the difference and I still struggle with it haha! I'm thinking that I could gather a list and send it out to my clients so that they can at least have the best experience possible.

I put the thread up, so hopefully this idea pans out!

Re: Spray tan won't come off

Interesting read so far, Here is my experience I have been spray tanning for 11 years with great success and I recommend for dry to very dry skin clients to apply moisturizer before spray tanning . I provide them with lotion that does not contain any petrolatum or mineral oil but has ingredients like jojoba oil , grape seed oil and what I have found that it actually helps to sooth their skin and achieve beautiful radiant brown tone tan. I also prefer to use spray tan solutions that contains natural oil like what I mention above with other hydrating ingredients like aloe vera and other botanical ingredients.
So far what I have seen and experienced that natural oil does not cause barrier, it actually becomes vehicle to help other ingredients work better on the skin.yes tricky I guess for company to formulate products as DHA is bit picky ingredient to work with but it is possible and I use the products with natural oils that works for my clients. just my thoughts

This is my observation as well.

Do you make your own blends or do you have a certian brand(s) you like?
