Starting in the mid 1950's, Dihydroxyacetone (the DHA that causes "tanning" on the skin) has also been used as an oral treatment in children with glycogen storage disease. Almost every country in the world uses it and it is used by millions of people a day, thus far there is not a single case that has shown any unhealthy side effects.
