Spotty Spray Tans

I have been doing a lot of spray tans lately, and just started getting a few complaints from customers experiencing spots that are not as tanned as other areas. I have been using Norvell Original on more fair skinned people. Could it be that I am applying too much solution to some areas and the areas with less solution would cause the tan to not be as dark there? I typically do one coat and then go over the entire body with a light miss to make sure i got the entire area. =( I think I need more training cuz 2 of the same complaints in one week means I am doing something wrong!

Make sure they are exfoliating good, with a NON sugar/salt exfoliant prior to the tan. I have my customers use St Ives Apricot Scrub (you can find it at walmart, walgreens, cvs, etc) also make sure your gun is clean and not spurting an uneven flow onto their body. If you have been doing them for a while and these are the first complaints, that might be the problem, if you are just starting out you probably just need more training. thespraytanningstore has a great training video if you feel like still think you need training. I spray 2 coats on all of my customers that way you make sure to get the enitre body.

I had a spray that one on my techs did that came out spotted and it was cause the lady had sprayed her body with body spray and where the mist was it did not take the color like the rest did, also make sure your not holding the gun to far away, when i'm training new techs they tend to hold it to far causing a spot effect

retail your own products. Plus apricot scrub is harsh on the skin as it is not a sphere but jagged pits.

Markee, Thanks for your feedback as well.. I got certified by Norvell and then also had a tech come to my salon to train me. I usually spray the entire body once.. drying sections as i go along.. then i go back and spray the body fast to make sure everything was covered. The few women recently came back to show me... i sprayed them all in original.. since then, i think i am going to spray everyone with dark as i saw very little color. One woman had severely dry skin and her legs were alligator like. she also had patched of skin with no color. Another woman had some spots darker than others.. though all of it was light because I used original. another woman had a spot on the back of her leg which didn't get anything. she was crazy. lol. i go over all of the pre and post instructions not only before they come in, but during my spray tan and then i reiterate aftercare when i ring them up.. always promoting the norvell after care product line. one woman did get the prolong.. but still, had the alligator effect.

I am not sure if it was my gun, not being clean (i might have neglected that a bit recently. i rinse it with hot water but hadn't taken it apart or lubricated it) I have had repeat business and some say it was the best spray then ever got... so i am just really insecure about what if anything I am doing wrong. they all look fab when they leave.

Re: Spotty Spray Tans

How often do you guys take apart your gun and clean and lubricate it? I hadn't done it in a while and just did.. and what a difference! a real fine mist and a much easier spray tan !
My gut is telling me that might have been the problem.

Re: Spotty Spray Tans

davidjsmithct,
Here are couple of reasons for spotty tan, number 1 is exfoliation, if skin is not properly exfoliated you will see spottiness because dry area will absorb more solution making it look darker than rest.
Ask clients to shave 24 hr in advanced because color guide will deposit in pores making it look spotty.
Please don't be afraid of using right type of sugar scrub, made by spray tanning companies that can be used on the day of or day before, it will rinse off totally without leaving any oily residue. this is especially good for clients with very dry skin. just to be sure to ask companies that it is made for something call scrub and spray tan .
Another reason if your solution has Xanthan Gum and if the batch is not processed properly it will show speckles on the skin when you are spraying.
And yes please make sure to clean your spray guns every evening before you close for the day, keep some empty bottles so you can empty out solution , rinse with hot water. Every 15 days use any spray gun cleanser or rubbing alcohol, clean the gun well and you should have no problem.
Hope this helps, Happy Tanning!
