Business is good, but where to go from here?!?!

I am doing a fair amount of business, pretty happy with where I'm at for my second yr... But Lately I have had A LOT of customers & people asking me how to go about starting their own Airbrush Business... I dont want to give my secrets away without at least making a profit LOL! But what's the next step? I am currently renting a room out of a salon, and doing some mobile appts, and parties.

Heres some ideas Ive had-
1. become a distributor for the products I use, and sell them my products (does anyone know what it takes to beecome a distributor?)
2. Hire them as contract workers (although thats risking they will take the knowledge theyve learned from me and become my competion)
3. Offer to give them info and train them, for a fee and let them go on their way.
Ive REALLY been dwelling on this so any input would be sooooo appreciated!!

IMO if you give a way your secrets, the money you make will be the last money you make. I think I would say it was really hard to get started, I don't recommend it.Competition is tough. We even looked for a company who wouldn't sell to every salon in our town.

I dont help people start sunless businesses. Doesnt mean I dont get estheticians etc buying a package and looking around to see what I use and starting their own. I flat out tell them I do not create my own competition, but I will be franchising in 2013 if they are interested in learning how to open their own sunless franchise then.

I have been having a ton of people asking about how to start their own business too. I don't want to seem insecure about competition but dont really want to give away all the information that took me hours upon hours to figure out on my own. I am not really worried about competition because I know I give a very quality service and product.
I know of a girl in my area that has set up a training program and she distributes equipment too. She doesnt actually spray tan anymore, just does these trainings. Don't know if this is a good idea to saturate the business.

I'd worry about competition. The more people doing our jobs, the less people to go around. Regardless of how good we are. It is also not feeling insecure not wanting to share your hard work. It is reality. You can not just walk into a business and expect them to share how they got started. Even if you have a mentor, they do not share everything. I take researching as seeing how serious someone is. If they want to take the easy way and just try to get me to tell them how to do it, they are going to be too lazy to start their own business, or they will start it but not succeed because they didnt research all that it entails. I usually tell them if they are adamant, to create business and marketing plans and to bring them to me and I will look them over. In over 7 years, never once had someone follow through

Yes it is really frustrating that people even have the nerve to ask!!... Im frustrated because I feel like sunless is really going to take off in my area & if I dont start making moves I am going to miss the boat

Thumbs down Re: Business is good, but where to go from here?!?!

It's amazing to me the gaul people have to ask certain questions, like asking how they could best become your competition. Do they think you're going to be excited to help them put you out of business? Do they think you'll be honest? Yes, please, this industry isn't cut-throat enough.

I love it when people ask "are there any other salons that do ___?". Really? You're asking me to refer you to a competitor? I'm not a freaking 411, go do a free Google search. I'm trying to run a business here.

Re: Business is good, but where to go from here?!?!

It is so sad to see the claws come out in this industry when in reality we are all trying to do good and make our clientele feel beautiful. I'm sure we all have a few stories to tell about how completely rood and unprofessional other spray tanning businesses in our areas have treated each of us. Competition IS a good thing, it keeps one on your toes and hopefully brings out the best in a business. It is the underlying petty, down right ruthless mean things other so called spray tanning businesses do to try and bring your business down or snoop to see how your business is ran. HARD WORK, PUTTING IN THE TIME, RESEARCH, MARKETING, NETWORKING & BEING KIND with a good BACKBONE is what it takes!!!!! Being mean, unprofessional and rootless will not get you business, my clients nor will it get you a good name, just a little SPRAY TAN food for thought!
