Re: Spraying Africian Americans

I will be spraying an African American Thu. My first. She said she is a medium color and wants to be sprayed to better hide the dark spots on her back, arms and chest for an upcomung vacation in April. I will be using either Sjolie or Norvell. I was thinking 14% Sjolie or the dark/double dark Norvell. What would you suggest and is it possible to achieve? 1 heavier coat or two light? She does not want to be darker, just evened out. Thank you.

Re: Spraying Africian Americans

Hi Autobronze -
I honestly think 14% will be a little too high if she is medium skin toned. I would say that 12% will be plenty, and she could likely be sprayed with 2 coats of 10.5 and be fine. As far as the dark spots on her back, I've sprayed lots of African-American models with the same desire and it will help conceal the spots, but they will still be visible. I responded to this original post because I sprayed so many African American classmates when I was in esthetics school, and I had the opportunity to see how various skin tones received the solution . If you go too dark on a light-skinned African American, they can still develop an "orangey" tone, so I'd say go a little conservative and you'll have beautiful results! Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Thank you RSterling. That is a great help. I'm thinking 12% will be good but I won't know until I see her. Poor girl just wants to wear a tank top on vacation. I will let you know how she turns out.

I've used two applications of 12% to even out the light and darker areas. One client believes the tan makes her skin look like Hally Barrys?? I have to admit the skin does look much more even toned. And the other poster is right in that if you apply too much or to high% it will look orangish too!! Don't ask how i know...

I did 2 light coats of 12% and it did help a little but her spots were everywhere on her upper torso and very dark so they were def still noticable. Thank you all for your help.

Re: Spraying Africian Americans

The way one of my African American clients explained to me once was, when white people get older, they get darker spots and when black people get older, they get lighter spots so they come in to even out their color. Just like you said, it gives them a warm color and they love it. I always use 12% on them and even add booster drops if they want to be darker than that.

You'll actually need to consider their skin tone when deciding what DHA to spray. I initially made the mistake of thinking I would be safe to use 11-12%, but the person was a lighter skinned African American, and they ended up having a strange "orange tint" in areas where their skin was lightest. Even a 8-9% DHA will give African Americans the even skin tone they are looking for, so I would start there, unless the person is very dark skinned naturally.

Hope this helps!

Re: Spraying Africian Americans

I have several clients who are Asian, African-American and bi-racial. Some are very light and have natural yellow tones and others are already tan but just want to be darker because to them, they are pale. For my clients that tend to be lighter and have yellow tones, the Norvell Venetian works great!! I also use the Norvell Double Dark.
