Space more profitable?!

I know it's been dicussed before but I am really debating mobile vs. storefront. I have my equipt. solution and all and am ready to "start", If I went with a space I would also offer mobile.
It seems already my friends that I spray would rather come to me. I live in an area in Montana (16,000 residents) that has many surrounding areas, towns so I feel I could reach so many more people with the space because I can't drive to them without charging way more than anyone would want to pay. I'm in a big tourist area and sunless is popular just the booths (but they are in the next town 30mi away), no airbrush around. My problem is that I have to sign a year lease, Rent is only $300/mo for a space downtown in a great newly remodled old building, they will even build to suit me (add a sink and else) BUT if I don't do well my family is not set up to pay the monthly rent for months on end with no profits comming in. Any advice will be sooooo great! Thank you!

Re: Space more profitable?!

I think you should go for it! It sounds like a good situation with the $300/mo rent. You already have some customers, being your friends. It won't take long for them to tell all of their friends and so on and you will have a good customer base. But make sure you advertise yourself too. You already said there is a market for it in yor town, with nobody doing it. That means no competition and a good profit, as long as you make it through the inevitable rough first few months or so. I don't usually like to take chances, but if I was in your situation, I might consider it. The only thing that might be a problem is the location. Is it in a high traffic area or a more upper-middle class area (if it is, then good)? I only say upper-middle class for one reason...something I have noticed is that if you place yourself in an area with a lot of discount stores and such, people will expect you to operate like the other businesses in the area. My sister owned her own business (a gym) for a couple of years in an area where it is was almost ALL discount stores. Everybody who came in the door expected things for dirt cheap and constantly wanted handouts. So if the place is in a good location, it almost seems like you can't go wrong! Well, that is just my 2 cents!

Re: Space more profitable?!

Thank you so much for your reply, the location is in a great area with all the nice shops and everything downtown.
I get so ansy thinking someone might swoop in and do it first! There are UV salons and I am worried that if I go mobile they hear about it and they then add sunless to their salon first, not that you start it overnight but you can quick enough if you work hard. I plan to let everyone know I'm in business if I do the salon (or even if I do just mobile) I even want to go to my local paper they always seem to do a story on new and unique businesses.

Re: Space more profitable?!

You're welcome. As for worrying that the salons might try to steal your business....from what I have read from some of the more experienced ones here, they say that that kind of thing is unavoidable. If your business is successful, they WILL hear about it eventually and they will do what they can to steal your customers. But everyone says that the way you treat your customers goes a long way. Most people are loyal, I know I am. When I find a product I really like or a store or service I really like it would take me a lot of persuasion to get me to change my mind. If I really like something and feel loyal to it, somebody could offer me a similar product for cheaper and I usually will decline. And I know a lot of other people are like that too. So when/if the salons try to mess with you, you just give your customers that reason to stay with you--maybe it's because you are so nice or because you offer that extra special something that the other places don't--I think you get my drift. Make your business into something so special that the other places won't be able to compete. Besides, if your place is so successful that others take notice to the point that they feel like they need to destroy you, it might not hurt you too much if they manage to steal 1 or 2 of your customers.
