How did she get these spots on her hands?

Hi,
I tanned this woman and I usually on do the bear claw way of tanning hands and only do it once LIGHTLY. This woman considered herself a "pro" at tanning and insisted I go over her hands again. I told her I don't do that. We went back and forth a bit and finally I said that I can't guarantee her hands if I go over them again. She didn't care.

Sure enough she sent me this picture in the morning of her hands. Her hands looked fine when I left of course, so how did these spots/stains happen. I have been tanning for about 7 months and spots like this on the hands are a first for me.

I will preface by saying I do not use barrier cream.

Is this due to going over them too much? Could she have touched a part of her body after the tan by lifting her shirt or something? This woman was irrate about her hands, so needless to say I won't be tanning her again, but I definitely want to know why this happened so I can be sure it doesn't happen again.

Thank you in advance.

Are there products that attract DHA vs. repel it? Strange how dark and uniform they seem. I'm new so no help but interested to know what caused it also!

First and foremost the hand looks good considering the over spray. Now to the spots; it doesn't look like it was caused by the overspray, had it been it would be in more than just that area. It also looks to even in shape, too round. She could have not get that much more on from rubbing against her body while getting dressed. Maybe she had a skin condition going on that she was not aware off, who knows it is hard to tell. You did well in warning her, she took the change. Maybe is best practice not to chance it next time regardless of what the client says, remember, you are the expert that knows best.

Those spots look like the spots I sometimes get on my hands when I have sprayed a group of people & have been switching solutions etc & handling the product a lot. Could it be possible your gun/ solution cup leaked a bit of solution on her hands when you were spraying?? Pushy clients are hard to deal with & you did the best you could so don't feel bad :-)

Re: How did she get these spots on her hands?

That does look like she got solution on her somehow? Ive only just started myself and finding my most problem areas are the hands and feet. I hate how when you spray someone it looks as though they were out on the sun with their socks on. I also do the bear claw on the hands and a light spray over the feet as well but I still dont think it blends as perfect as Id like it but its better than having hands or feet that look dirty and unnatural. One of my friends accidently touched the inside of the tent and of course we didnt notice till the next day when the insides of her hands turned color, I dont know what you are spraying in but it could be possible she may have touched something.

Re: How did she get these spots on her hands?

Thank you for all your comments so far, you all are a wealth of info.
I did not change solution during the tan, so I don't think there was any sputtering or leaking from the spray gun.

I think that the idea that maybe she touched the tent is definitely possible. I never thought of that, but she could have just touched it slightly if she put her hands out too far. That is a thought.

I have definitely learned my lesson because from now on, no matter what people want, I will do what I know is good. One time over the hands and that is it :).
I just had someone two days ago ask for her feet again and I refused and guess what, it turned out perfect, so definitely will go with what I know works. :)

I agree that she must have touched the tent and got extra solution on her fingers. Nothing about that looks like it is from you spraying her hands extra. I also make sure to emphasize to everyone who is going to sleep before showering to do what it takes to keep from sleeping with their hands resting on their skin. It's possible that's what happened here.

Re: How did she get these spots on her hands?

I agree with Natalie. The first thing I thought of is extra solution . If I get some on the side of my fingers if it leaks or if I'm switching cups or taking my Cup off to clean. That is not a spray issue. I thought maybe since she wanted darker maybe she tried to add some self tanner when she got home ?

One part baking soda, one part water. Combine into a paste and rub on the darker areas. Works perfect to fade the color.
