Re: Extraction Fans for Mobile Spray Tans?

The system I use is the Tanning Essentials Pro Machine. No matter how many clients I tan, there is no need for an extraction fan. My system leaves very little over spray. My solution is a quick dry as well. From what I remember when I first tested the Maxi Mist, it left a lot of over spray....even when I turned the spray flow on low. I noticed this when I trained my students how to spray tan who owned that machine as well. With the Maxi mist, yes you would need to use an extraction fan.

Re: Extraction Fans for Mobile Spray Tans?

My main machine is a Norvell VIP aka Tanning Essentials Pro model and my back-up is a mini-mist aka Apollo T100. I was surprised at the difference the mini-mist had a lot more overspray although I found better coverage in a single application but it must have been at a higher setting. So I totally agree with Paradise Bronze that an extraction fan is not as necessary with my main unit but definitely a good idea with Maxi-Mist or a Mini-Mist. Also I think when using an airbrush as there is considerably more overspray it makes a HUGE difference.

Re: Extraction Fans for Mobile Spray Tans?

Yes the Apollo T100 does have alot of overspray which a fan would be good to have.

Thank you Jeniunetan. Cheers!

There is actually quite a lot of misinformation regarding overspray and spray machines.

Overspray is not created by the size of your spray machine, but by your spray gun. If you are getting overspray, then your spray gun is probably allowing the needle to pull back too far when you "pull the trigger". Allow me to explain:

The hole that the solution comes out of is stoppered by a needle, when you pull the trigger the needle is pulled back from the hole, allowing air to "fire" the solution at your client.

The needle can be adjusted so that it doesn't pull back as far from the hole, thus allowing less solution to be fired--you stop overspray simply by adjusting how much airflow this needle allows to pass through the hole.

That being said, an extraction fan is a great decision either way because it gives your clients the peace of mind in knowing that the fan is purifying the air.

Re: Extraction Fans for Mobile Spray Tans?

Thanks Brian for the valuable information!

Actually I called Aviva and spoke with Joshua (I think) and he answered my slightly panicky questions about where to set up an extraction fan with the Aviva backdrop. Since obviously it cannot go behind as with a tent. So kudos Aviva on customer service! : )

I will just state for anyone else reading this post your fan should be positioned to the side on a low setting. I am going to try it tomorrow. I have the extractor fan that is widely available including on the Aviva site which has the clips for a disposable filter.

I so wish I had the turbo twister portable as it is black to hide any solution even a little shows up like crazy on those fans. I was looking into the black washable filters and thought I might add that to the front of my fan since it will be in plain view. At least with the tent it is not as on display. I would love to see some more videos using the backdrop set-up as I think it would be really helpful for those who have it already and those considering it to add to their equipment.

Happy Tanning!

Re: Extraction Fans for Mobile Spray Tans?

Hi jenuinetan,

Great to hear about your experience, and good point about having a black fan. We've been in talks with changing/adding new colors--I personally have no idea why they went white in the first place!

We are actually in the process of setting up a blog so that our Marketing Guru, Drew, can post articles ranging from how DHA actually effects the skin to using backdrops (yay!). They can be pretty tricky! I'll push your idea forward about updating the videos for the backdrops as well as creating an easy-to-follow how-to manual that you could download off our website (or view whenever).

Feel free to find us on Facebook if you have any more questions/comments!

Smile Re: Extraction Fans for Mobile Spray Tans?

Thanks again Brian!

I look forward to checking out the upcoming demo videos!

Thought I would share (see photo) with anyone else looking for an inexpensive and eco-friendly solution for the "white" extractor fan issue.

I purchased a washable black filter which can be adjusted to fit and am quite happy with the results. I know Aviva recommends a minimum of merv 8 but the least expensive disposable filters are only a merv 5 and this one is merv 7 and in my opinion worked well.

I purchased on sale at my local Canadian Tire for $10 regularly $33. What a deal! It is called The Web and it is available at Home Depot and I would imagine all home improvement stores plus made in the USA. As a side note I added 3M stick on hooks when I first purchased this fan with a Velcro cable tie to hold the power cord in place.

I would love a Tornado fan or a Turbo Twister but until that point this is will do the trick!

Happy Tanning!

First of all: I applaud you on your MacGyver skills!

On the Merv: 1-4 grades are what are in basic air conditioner filters, and 5-8 are generally used for anything from commercial buildings to factories so 7 should be fine unless you are spray tanning within some pretty hazardous places!

Also, is this the Backdrop assembly video you've seen? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRNXQyeMNUw

Re: Extraction Fans for Mobile Spray Tans?

Thank-you! : )

Yes, that is the video that I viewed before I purchased the backdrop. I must commend Teddi on how easy she made set-up look! Although I guess like most things in life I am getting better with experience.

I use 3 of the backdrop poles which works out to approx. 7 feet and for some reason the black backdrop just fits the pole so it is snug. I placed a white sheet on the massage table behind it and am happy to report there was no overspray that went through the backdrop so it did it's job. I use sticky feet and placed the MacGyvered fan to the side.

It is actually quite liberating to have so much more space after spraying clients within a 4x4x7 pop-up tent for the last 2+ years. Clean up is a breeze.....I definitely recommend it!

Happy Tanning!
