New to Spray tanning, need advice

I own a 3-bed salon in a small town and have decided that I need to add airbrush spray tanning to my menu. I am looking for your opinions on what type/brand work well for you.

Also, what size room do you have yours set up in?

The Norvell system is great. You want the room to be comfortable and yet it is not important to make it to large. You can do a space 5' wide and at least 6' deep but 8' deep gives you more space to work with. These are minimum dimensions you can go larger. Sherry based on your market it is so important that you introduce spray tanning .

Re: New to Spray tanning, need advice

I have never received a spray tan myself so thought I should get one before learning to do it myself. I asked the individual what product she uses but was quickly shut down and told it was proprietary and that she doesn't share that information with anyone. Hmm, thought that was a little overkill but ok. From what I've learned since, that seems to be the same with all salons.

The only thing in the room was a couple moist towellets and a hair covering. I wasn't sure if I need to have anything else on hand.

That room size sounds pretty good and should fit in nicely with my available space.

Norvell is all I use, my clients love it! Your room size depends on what equipment you are getting. I have a salon and also go mobile. My room at the salon can fit a level 1 average size bed, this accommodates my tent, bench and supply cabinet.
Good Luck!

Hey earthangels!

Adding spray tanning is a great move! I know a lot of people are funny about sharing what product they are using in salons and spas. Not to worry you are on the right forum because I find everyone here is really nice and totally willing to share information. :)

Like HeatherGem I also use Norvell products but honestly because of your location you can try lots of different brands. Don't get me wrong I am happy with Norvell products but you'll find that everyone has a favourite and that was through trying different solutions.

I would recommend before setting up your room that you purchase a start-up package which includes your machine, tent, solution and disposables because the first rule of TAN Club is practise!!

Plus if you have a tent you can use it in your room AND be mobile even if that only means that you take your stuff home to practise on friends & family. Since you are adding this service to your existing location and it is new to you I would start small you can always upgrade and keep your original machine as a back-up.

I have done several reviews on tan tents, machines and solution on my youtube channel if you are looking for ideas or something to help you fall asleep....Zzzzzzzz.

I look forward to hearing about your growing business in future!

I also use Norvell, and I tell anyone (clients, shoppers) that asks. We provide a terry wrap for the customer for when I re-enter and leave the room, a shower cap, and neat feet. I also have eye protection, nose plugs, and disposable undergarments upon request. My room has two cabinets, shelves with maintenance products, a chair, hooks on the wall, my backdrop, HVLP box, and extraction fan. My room once held a "level 1" bed.

And yes, practice is the MOST important thing! Norvell is great to work with and can definitely help you with a starter kit.

I use Paradise Bronze when tanning clients. I give them a hair cap, barrier cream, ph balance spray, and disposable undergarments and nose filters are available upon request as well. When I train new students how to spray tan and start their business, I give them a start up kit if they just take the training class and a models to spray tan . Ofcourse they have to practice more afterwards.

I use Jamaica Me Tan solution and I love it! You can get a sample pack from them to test out the colors. Great customer service and support too. I have a salon and all we do is airbrush tanning. We've been using JMT for almost 5 years now and it's just a great product. Definitely get as much practice in as possible!! And make sure you get airbrushed yourself more than a few times so you have first hand knowledge of the process the tan goes through on your own skin. Also, make sure you offer your customers nose plugs, eye protection, disposable undergarments, and lip protection.
Good luck!

I personally despise using a tent if you can do a proper back drop and stay professional. :)

Re: New to Spray tanning, need advice

I'm looking at the Norvell Sunless Arena and was wondering what you think about which backdrop to pick. They have one that is all black, one that is colored and one that is mirrored. What's your preference. Mirror is a no no for sure.

I'd like to offer some retail items as well such as shower soap and moisturizers. Do any of you offer these and if so, what brand. I just wish Norvell packaging was much nicer and not as formal.
