Dealing with sarcastic family members

I am curious if anyone has experienced this. Since I started airbrush tanning my family members have been making little comments. I Get complements from friends and even strangers but my family is critical.
The first thing my mother does when she sees me is tries to find every little fault with the tan. My dad make a comment thinking he was funny asking me if I went to "Earl Scheib" to get painted.

I guess maybe it is just their nature however I got very turned off to them and it makes me not even want to be around them. The strange thing is that they were never like this when I used a self tanner. Just when I started up a business.

I can see if I looked like a carrot or did not take pride and care in my tans. I guess I just have to keep this part of my life to myself and not even discuss the business part with them anymore. Just curious if anyone else has had negative family members.

Jealousy? Congrats on your new step of power and keep your head up! Ignore the haters, they will soon fade away!

I think once they see you become successful in your business venture, they will change their tone completely. (If they are anything like my parents they will take CREDIT for all your successes.) When I first started my business my parents thought I was crazy. "Spray tans, why would you spray tan?" (Keep in mind they are Midwest farmers.) About 6 months into the business and my clientel building, my dad says to someone, "I don't know much about this spray tanning thing but I didn't think bottled water would take off either."

NOW a little over a year into my business and I just bought my first salon, my dad is constantly mentioning new people he knows who might be interested in a spray tan! Keep up the hard work and positive thinking! Your family will surely come around, sometimes people just have a hard time showing their support.

Remember, people only hate on things they like.

I have a sister in law who tans in a tanning bed all the time. She is my worst nightmare she's so negative about this.My partner and I use to tan in a bed and about a year ago decided this was the wave of the future. My partner just had a Melanoma removed from her back 10 stitches and a lot of fear.We have the only custom spray tanning place within about 30 miles. This is new and people are not familiar with the process.I want everyone to tan safe, but it's hard to change the minds of people. We have only been open 5 weeks and each week we grow more, not rolling in the dough by far but building. You can't let the negative factors bring you down focus on the happy ones that walk out of your salon.I've made it a tiny mission to educate anyone around me that will listen.I have 2 teen daughters and would love to have the kids at school come to us but they are stuck in the tanning bed mode.

You can always pick your friends but you can't pick your family!!!

Tell them by the looks of things you could use my services or tell them as good as you are you don't think you could help them

I'm a single Mom and new to the business, but my Dad is my biggest supporter! In fact, he loaned me the cost of the start-up. My equipment should be arriving any day. I'm beginning to tell everyone I know. My brother-in-law made some sarcastic comments, but overall, I think the family has adopted a wait and see attitude. You can't let other people bring you down. The best thing to do is to be successful!!

Hey Melissaw! Just do the best you can do, my dad is the same way even after 16 yrs in the business, he still puts down my profession with little bs comments. Latest was the "well your 50 now, when are you gonna get a real job"? In my past life before back surgery and reconstruction i was a construction worker, heavy equipment operator, and before that a laborer, for real!! I am dam good at my craft, well known in town, and other salons refer clients to me for spray tanning, massage, and microderm, i just keep busy and figure he's just hating because he's lonely, old, and just a pain in the azz at times. Just keep on truckin, and dont check rear view mirror !!!
