Do melanoidins induced by sunless tanning spray inhibit vit D?

: Photochem Photobiol. 2009 Sep-Oct;85(5):1265-6. Epub 2009
Do melanoidins induced by topical 9% dihydroxyacetone sunless tanning spray inhibit vitamin d production? A pilot study.

Armas LA, Fusaro RM, Sayre RM, Huerter CJ, Heaney RP.
Osteoporosis Research Center, Creighton University, Omaha, NE.
We report here preliminary pilot study data of the effect of sunless tanning spray with 9% [Correction added after online publication (August 24th, 2009): The concentration of Dihydroxyacetone used in the study was 9% and not 3% as previously stated] dihydroxyacetone (DHA) on 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] serum levels in subjects exposed to controlled amounts of UV-B radiation during April/May in Omaha, NE, 41 degrees N latitude. We found that DHA-induced melanoidins in skin act as a topical sunscreen attenuating the formation of 25(OH)D.

Re: Do melanoidins induced by sunless tanning spray inhibit vit D?

Real nice. I've always wondered how the DHA would react in the skin with UV exposure.

I remember the Orlando Trade Show, we had the live Ayk Freestyle beds, some girl got ticked at me because I told her not to tan after she just got done doing the Mystic spray tan. I told her it might limit her results as we didn't know if the DHA would block the UV, therefore not knowing what she got the color from. (This was 5 years ago)

So if this is true, where does the industry go from here?

I'm all for the push on Vitamin D, but for all the salons that have sunless it kind of a hard situation.

Sunless tanning is still in it's infancy- only 10 years in.

Great find Eileen.

Re: Do melanoidins induced by sunless tanning spray inhibit vit D?

I have always promoted the use of the stand up after a spray session.

In consideration of Vitamin D being blocked, I may have to rethink my marketing to these clients. For those of you that UV first and spray second, what kind of lotion, if any, do you recommend the client use during the UV session?

My spray clients have always been instructed: no oils, lotions, etc. before a spray.

I would go as far to say that 50% of of my spray clients are also UV.

We do our "cocktails" with the uv visit first followed by the spray. Some use lotion before their uv visit and some don't. Many use VersaSpa's Amplifier Gel too. To be honest it doesn't really seem to matter whether they use lotion or not. It always turns out great.

I wonder if it makes any difference if you do the UV first, I'm sure it takes several hours (I think up to 14 or so) to be absorbed. I'm not really sure absorbed is even the word I want there. lol

The concern I have with UV first is the lotion not being fully absorbed thus causing surface residue.

However, there are clients that I spray sometimes who just have so much natural surface oil/residue that the solution easily runs if the tech is not careful. These type clients- UV tanning with lotion before being sprayed, would be awful.

I've been sprayed with lotion on and been fine. I think it depends on the client.

I had a lady come in last week for her spray and stand up UV after. She said she was telling her friend about it. Friend goes to spray (somewhere else) and wants to tan after, instead of her usual before, and the staff at that salon would not let her.

Re: Do melanoidins induced by sunless tanning spray inhibit vit D?

I asked my dist rep for their take on this back when I started offering spray - she said that if you're doing UV tans before spray, customers should still use a lotion but NOT one that is gel or silicone-based. The rest are absorbed by the skin and do not affect the spray. I have limited experience as most of my spray customers don't do UV (yet - I'm working on that); just passing on what I was told. FWIW.

Re: Do melanoidins induced by sunless tanning spray inhibit vit D?

Infinity Sun's Normalize Elixir works to spray them with before they UV tan then do their spraytan after. :)
Charge $10 to $14 for the treatment and it can double as a tanning lotion.
