It's not your fault you only know one side of the story and you're going by what you hear in the media etc. You should realize you will get blasted for talking negatively about tanning beds on a tanning salon owners forum. Anyway I was in highschool in the 70's and knew getting a sunburn was not good for your body. I wouldn't play the naive role here that's like saying a teen didn't know you shouldn't go over the speed limit in a car to me. Anyway I'll help out all I can but only if you are capeable of having an open mind to see all sides of a story. :)

This forum is really great for info and I come here just about everyday to look through the posts (new and old). I have found that there are some people here who want to do nothing but get on your case. However, there are many more who are willing to help and give some great advice. Just learn to ignore the negative ones and develop a thick skin. I think they forgot they were once new and didn't know everything there is to know about the tanning industry (not to mention that they forgot they were young once too, and did some things that were not too bright). Anyway, so back to my point...don't get discouraged. Keep coming back and asking questions because you might have a question that I have never thought of before and I could learn something new from the answer. Thanks! |

But because you did, now you have to go around saying things that you have no idea what you're talking about. YOU got skin cancer because YOU over abused tanning! Tanning in general is not the problem, it's people that over do it, and then decide to run around saying that it's bad. YOU over exposed yourself. YOU tanned more then you should have in a single day. YOU wanted to be darker then you were. YOU punished your own body and payed the price! If YOU had never done any of those things, and tanned correctly and in moderation, you most likely would not have come down with skin cancer. And we would not be having this discussion. But, you did, so here we are.

I simply replyed to someone elses response and here I am getting bashed left and right. This is ridiculous... It's actually a little comical to see that little ol' me I inspired such spite and snarkiness. Wow is all I can say. |

That's like attacking JIFF for a peanut allergy you were born with. Don't blame your broken skin on anything other than bad genes. |

My main focus is making sure that my children do not get sunburns like I did!!!!! It is the burn - not the tan and that's all I'm saying.

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Newbie Here: Overwhelmed..What do I do first? Food for thought from a reliable medical source, not just tanning salon owners who obviously have a vested interest in promoting their business. The point is that many of us enjoy having a tan and yes, there are some benefits to moderate exposure, ie Vitamin D. However, as with anything, we need to weight the risks and benefits. Just like alcohol, cigarette smoking, flying, driving, getting on a roller coaster, having sex, etc, etc. I have been to countless tanning salons where I have been told to not worry because getting in a tanning bed is healthier for me. Please staff your salons with people who know the risks and can educate their customers properly. A lot of young women do not know this and are being told that it is better than laying out in the sun. Proper education is key. When properly educated on risks vs benefits, you then have the choice and if you develop skin cancer, then you made the choice to put yourself at risk. More Young Women Get Skin Cancer Sun-Damaged Skin Slideshow Study Shows Increase in Melanoma Among Young Women By Kelley Colihan WebMD Health News Reviewed By Louise Chang, MD July 10, 2008 — A new data review suggests that melanoma is on the rise among young women, but not among young men. Researchers looked at data from women aged 15 to 39. The team, led by Mark Purdue of the National Institutes of Health, examined data from a network of cancer registries across the U.S. in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. The analysis focused on whites diagnosed from 1973 to 2004. From the 1990s, an increased incidence of melanomas was found in women. In men, the incidence held fairly steady between 1980 and 2004. Data reviewers noticed a greater increase in young women having thicker and metastatic melanomas during that time period. The researchers suggest that the increase is not just the result of changes in the way the medical community tracks the disease. Researchers say it's not entirely clear why more and more young women seem to be getting skin cancer. Separate studies have looked at sun damage trends. Here is some of what the researchers cited: More and more people in the U.S. are getting sunburn, although trends by age groups have not been reported. 16- to 18-year-olds had a higher incidence of sunburn and reported that they spent more days at the beach in 2004 then they did in 1998. More young people in the U.S., mostly women, are using tanning beds. Studies suggest that UV rays from tanning beds and tanning lamps can be just as damaging as sun rays. Melanoma is the deadliest type of skin cancer. Ultraviolent radiation is a main risk factor for developing melanoma. The study is published in the July 10 edition of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. SOURCES: News release, Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Purdue, M. Journal of Investigative Dermatology, published online July 10, 2008. |
