I have too many friends and family members that have had skin cancer. I don't believe anyone can debate that UV Tanning can lead to skin cancer. Those that say it doesn't are ignorant. |

Sunless section or not we are all involved in the same business and in consequence we should support or at least respect each other. It is completely wrong to market a spray tan business as an alternative to UV simply on the basis of skin cancer issues. Rest assured that sensible exposure to UV is not only healthy but also improves on the sense of wellness and well being to those that do. Market your business on the positive...look at the attributes of sunless tan application methods/outcome but please please not at the expense of the UV sector..this is just simply negative marketing which in the long run will work against you and your business. It sounds like you may be a salon owner, so you may get upset when you here comments about skin cancerand tanning beds. So, that is what I am going to assume in my reply. So here goes, I don't know all the details about tanning beds and the Uv stuff, but I do know this. I laid in the tanning bed almost every day after high school in the mid-late 1990's. I even bought a tanning bed for myself for home use in 2001. By 2004 I was diagnosed with Basil Cell skin cancer on two places on my face. The crest in my my upper lip, and the side of my nose. I was only 28. I required a skin graft for my lip with about 10 stitches, and extensive reconstructive surgery and approx 18-20 stitches for my nose. It took two days and two surgeries. Thank god I had insurance because the cost was almost 30,000. It took almost 6 monthes to heal, and a 1 year before it looked decent. ALL of my doctors said that the skin cancer was a direct result of the tanning bed use, and to stay out. The also informed me of the extreme rise in skin cancer for young people in their twenties coming in with the same problem that usually 70-80 years olds get. This is what I was told, and also what I now believe. Now I only get spray tans and am happy to do so. I am sorry if this info is negative towards tanning salons, but this was my personal experience with tanning beds and skin cancer. I am not pointing any fingers, just restating what I was told by numerous medical doctors. |

Olive oil is good for you right? Omegas to help fight fat and good cholesterol to lower bad cholesterol. Good stuff, yeah? That doesn't mean you can drink a gallon a day and everything will be just fine. Tanning (along with EVERYTHING else in life) should not be abused. It should be used in moderation to promote Vitamin D synthesis (which is a cancer fighter), to aid in sunburn protection (for those long vacations), and to make you LOOK and FEEL good! If you're a UV abuser, you need to put the blame on yourself, not on the tanning bed. Again, this just solidifies my stance that UV abstinence and Sun Avoidance is the WRONG message. Teenage pregnancies are on the rise too, yet everytime you turn on the TV all you hear about is ABSTINENCE. It's the wrong message, instead the message should be how to protect yourself and how to have SMARTSex :) | |

If this is the case and you are completely sure that the tanning bed (you have never been to the beach or laid in the sun) the tanning bed caused your cancer then why would you be at a tanning salon owner site? Tanning beds offer great benefits in a controlled environment to those who do not misuse them. Vitamin D is one of the greatest benefits a person can receive for their well being. ???????? |

I should be able to post a reply about possibly considering SUNLESS tanning as an option over tanning beds in this specific forum. I now operate a small Mobile Spray tanning business. I do not promote tanning either in beds or in the sun, nor do I bash them on this site. I do promote spray tanning instead. That being said, I only stated my experience above as a response to someone elses remark. Sorry if it stepped on anyones toes, but I am not suprised that folks defend tanning beds like they do. I love tanning beds just like anyone else, but there are consequences to laying in a tanning bed, and thats all I'm saying. |

I was only a kid in highschool and tanning was all the rage. In addition I spray tan now because I haven't tanned in about three years due to advice from my dematologist. Does that make me an addict? Maybe there should be a class in highsschool or better yet middle school about the effects of overexposure to tanning and the sun, then I guess it would be my fault that I was uneducated on the subject and as a result got skin cancer. Really, you should grow up. This an adult site and requires adult conversation. I don't judge people or point fingers, and neither should you. |
