Touch-up/2nd spray tan = more un-even. What did I do wrong? How to fix?

OK- so I am still practicing on my friends before I start charging $ and I am having a prob.
I sprayed my gf a week ago and it turned out fabulous! She later told me she used a loofa EVERYNIGHT after in her showers...lol I told her that was a no no.
So I went to spray her again- a week later- Most of her last tan faded but she still had a few spots that didn't come off even after she exfoliated. So she told me today she can still see the previous spots from the last tan (tummy area) It is just lightly covered with the new tan.
WHAT DO I DO to prevent this? I'm thinking maybe because this last solution was a lighter DHA. It didn't cover but I am not sure.

How often do you spray your regulars and do you ever have problems making the tan even? (If the previous tan has a few spots)
What am I doing wrong? Do you have them exfoliate again before the next tanning session? Or do you just go over it?

I heard about having a "base" and then just touch ups every week or 2...but I am having a hard time thinking that would work when the 2nd tan is more uneven due to the previous spray.

HOpe this makes sense.

Any tips/tricks/advice= GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!
