Being sprayed once, twice or three times with same solution.

I'm new in the spray tanning business, I went to a salon to be spray tanned, and 1st thing I noticed was that they didn't offer any barrier cream, or cap for hair/nose, then she went on and explained that she would spray me once and if I wanted to be darker she would spray me a second time or third, all with same solution . Now with my research I have read that you need barrier cream, and you also need different DHA levels 8, 10, 12, to get darker. Has anyone ever heard of being sprayed once, twice etc. with same solution ? barrier cream is it really that necessary?

Re: Being sprayed once, twice or three times with same solution.

If a tech is experianced no you really don't. I might suggest some kind of lotion on the hand because the first thing someone does is touch thier tanned skin, this will cause the extremely porious palm to pick up the solution and turning the palm dark. It extreme cases it can leave a hand print on the place you touched that is lighter than the rest of you skin. I learned this the hard when I got sprayed and went right to bed. I sleep on my hands. I woke up with a hand print on my face. It would have been pretty funny if we weren't in Vegas for a Trade show.
You don't necessarly need all of the %'s we tell people to spray one day wait 1 day then spray again. example spray on Monday and again on Wednesday.

Re: Being sprayed once, twice or three times with same solution.

I spray multiple coats because our solution dries fast enough to do it like that with our guns. No barrier cream is used in my salon, and I train my students to tan properly without having to use it. I saw that you are in New Jersey and I have trained several salons and mobile businesses there so it sounds like you might have ran into one of my girls.. We use a 9.5% and can get pretty much every shade of tan by the amount you spray on the person...

These concepts are no unheard of, it's just that most companies have capitalized on making you feel you need 5 different levels of solutions to achieve a wide range of tans....that is how they make their money - you buy 5 gallons when in reality you only need one...

We don't recommend doing more that one coat at a time with our solution (unless it is 2 light coats) This really makes a differnce when you get into the higher DHA's. The skin can only handle so much of it before it turns nasty.

Re: Being sprayed once, twice or three times with same solution.

the magic tan booths have 3 levels of spray. It's the same solution , just sprays more on you to get more color.

It's normal. 3 different solutions are not necessary to get more color.

Look at a self tanner. If you want to get darker, you apply more. There is no need to buy 3 different shades of bronzer. Waste of money.

So to answer your question, they aren't doing anything wrong.

Nose filters are used more for enclosed booths. if you are being airbrushed and there are extraction fans, no need for nose filters.

Caps are not necessary as they are not spraying your hair. This is a human spraying you, so unless the have convulsions when they spray you, you shouldn't have any issues.

In other words, if they are trained properly....nothing to worry about.

I go into my spray booth without nose filters, hair caps or barrier cream. no biggy.

Have to disagree Din. Magic booths do offer different shades.Too much solution can cause orange. If someone gets sprayed with bleached or grey hair they need to protect it with a hair cap. I wouldn't encourage people to be sprayed without nose protection. When doing hand held our techs are required to wear masks. Too much unknown...everything in moderation. IMO

Re: Being sprayed once, twice or three times with same solution.

Every solution is different. I have 8 shades to choose from but I still do two very light coats and I have told people if they want to be darker they can come back the next day. I'd rather go too light than too dark but using barrier cream and disposables ect. is standard for me and they dont offer it in the town next to me. Doesn't nec. mean they dont know what they are doing, just that they dont offer the same amenities.

No barrier cream here.
I have hair nets. I think they are a waste.
My exhaust totally rocks so i dont use nose plugs, but offer them to the clients.
I spray twice very lightly, rather than one heavier.
150 watts of infra red heat for client comfort.
8,10,12% but have used just 10% with all skin types with no problem, clients like the idea of a custom blend of 8+10% or whatever.
No need to come back in the same week... unless they are a regular and have a speaking engagment ect...and want a facial touchup, i charge them $5 face only.
Facial tan only clients are walkin only and pay $15
