DHA allergies?

I am still in the practice stages of spray tanning . I have been practicing on friends and family with the Sunfx machine and solution . I have been using the bronzer only.
Today was the first day to use the actual DHA solution . I used the #2 solution on two family members. The first had no problems.
The second was my son, 12 years old. He's approximately 5ft 5 inches tall and weighs about 125 pounds, so about the same size as a small female. I got about halfway through with him and he began to say he felt very faint. He started sweating profusely and felt sick. I had him sit down for a while. He then took a shower to wash the solution off of his body. He seems to be fine now.
Was this an allergic reaction to the solution ? Is this what normally happens to someone if they have a problem with it. Has this ever happened to anyone else and what do you do? I'm just glad it was not a first paying customer!

Re: DHA allergies?

No, no peanut allergies. He did have an issue when he was born. His liver was immature. He was induced 4 wks early and spent a week in ICU. He was given several meds including Phenabarbatol to get his liver to "kick in". He of course developed jaundice. He had it off and on for about six months. He did see specialists, etc. His liver was never able to completely break down the billirubin in his system, so even today there are times when he is a little yellow, but it actually look like a pretty good tan. His billirubin remains a little high and fluctuates some but it is not dangerous or life threatening levels. He was the second case his specialist knew of in her career that had this issue. He is completely healthy though thank the lord! I am wondering if this has something to do with it. Would someone with peanut allergies be a concern as well?

Re: DHA allergies?

I believe someone with nut allergies would have issues. It often has koala nut etc. in the ingredients. You could research that further. I think Amy might have more information on it. I haven't had anybody with issues other then my employees mom who's have skin reactions to everything since she cleaned out an pet rabbits carge. She thought she would and did breakout in little bumps.

Re: DHA allergies?

Thank you for replying. I will research it further. Also, would birthcontrol (not that my son takes it, totally another topic!!) affect results. I have read yes and no.. Would the pill, deposhot or birth control implants affect the outcome differently from. They are each different in chemical makeup, etc. so would one form of birthcontrol show more (or less) effect than another?

Re: DHA allergies?

Was he wearing the nose filters? The solution is topical so it can really only enter your system through the mucosal membranes, typically through the nose. Especially in the timeframe of it just being applied.

I had a girl get hives, but she was allergic to a derivative of formaldihyde, which is in the solution . Unfortunately, she did not wear the offered nose plugs and it was the inhalation of the solution that caused the reaction.

DHA itself is a naturally occurring amino acid, so it's considered pretty safe and has rare allergic reactions. It is added to some oral suspensions, I think they are diet drinks, to increase their fat burning ability. The reaction could be from the fragrance or the dye, which are more common suspects.

One other thing that can cause faintness, etc., is standing for too long with your legs completely straight (not slightly bent at the knees). This actually inhibits proper blood circulation. Men tend to "stand at attention" when getting sprayed. Maybe it makes them feel more dignified. Or maybe that's just how they stand. Who knows.

Re: DHA allergies?

No, I didn't have him wearing nose filters. Would that really make that much of a difference whether they're breathing through their nose or mouth? And I don't ask that disrespectfully, I just don't know! Would I need to buy actual nose filters or would cotton balls do the trick?

Re: DHA allergies?

At our salon we have a filtration system and nose filters are mandatory.
Do a search on Breathe Pure nose filters, they are the nicest and most comfortable that we've tried.

I think that tamba bay has the black charcoal style as well but someone else might know better on them... I haven't tried those yet. :)

Re: DHA allergies?

I had the exact same thing happen to me twice with a client. The first time she did the same thing I was only about 2 to 3 mins into spraying her and she got really pale in the face and started sweating really bad and then said she was going to pass out...so I sat her down...and she said she didn't eat all day and that had to be the reason why she felt sick...so I managed to finish what I could...so then 2 weeks later she came back and was feeling fine...and joked that she made sure she ate this time...and then once again 2-3 mins into it same thing over again...but worse she was gaging ...so I stopped and figured it was the solution that was making her sick....never has happened before or after to anyone else I have sprayed...needless to say she just tans in the beds now..
