Paying in a mobile setting...

For those of you that do mobile spray tans :
What forms of payment do you accept?
If you accept credit cards do you process them later?
Any helpful things you've learned regarding payments from clients is appreciated!

There is a credit card machine that is portable. Looks like a cell hone that you just swipe them on and it gives you a auth # right then. I will get more info on that product and get back with you. When we do craft show's for our makeup we charge 3% service fee to run them. People usually come up with the cash if they have to pay a fee for it.

Re: Paying in a mobile setting...

I know I definitely want to have the option of paying with a credit card. Only because I know people will buy more if that is an option. I rarely carry cash on me, and I know a lot of younger people are the same way. If I had to go get cash out for something, I usually don't get a lot extra, so I might not have extra cash for the aftercare products if I decided to buy them.
Has anyone taken personal checks? Anyone got burned this way?

You can call her bank since you have a returned check from her. Tell them the account # on the check as well as the other info. They won't say "$xx,xxx is the amount in the account, yes you can cash it" however if you say "I have a returned check for $120, will it go through". They have to tell you yes or no. So, like OnBronzer said.. keep trying..

Re: Paying in a mobile setting...

I have a merchant account with CapitalOne. They gave me a free wireless payment processor, if I don't have it with me, I'm still able to accept credit cards thru my phone manually (it has to be a compatible smart phone -- there are many on the list). If you Google "wireless merchant account" you can get some info. Also check out Authorize.net for more mobile merchant info. You can also set up a "virtual terminal" which allows you to accept credit card payments online -- this works if you are able to access the internet from anywhere. PayPal has higher fees than most merchant accounts. Also, if you accept payments prior to your appointment, you might miss out on a tip.

Re: Paying in a mobile setting...

I quit accepting checks and only use my mobile cc machine and/or cash. I like the mobile cc machine as there is a tip line on it which is brilliant, but I like cash even better as it costs nothing to process cash. Processing via paypal and the credit card machine is efficient, however it takes a bit of a bite out of the profit. So many businesses have quit accepting checks (restaurants, gas stations, etc), too much of a hassle all the way around. It's becoming standard practice.
