How to Completely Remove Suntan Lotion Prior to Sunless Tanning (help! help!)
Hello folks, and thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Here's our dilemma:
My wife and I are *very* fair skinned, so we use sunless tanner prior to going on beach vacations and it works great. And while on vacation, we protect our skin with waterproof SPF 50+ lotion. But therein lies the problem: After 4 or 5 days at the beach, our sunless tan begins to fade. But when we try to use sunless tanner to touch up our fake tans, we find that the waterproof suntan lotion has become EMBEDDED in our skin. And it almost *completely* blocks the effect of the sunless tanner! It seems nothing short of #80 sandpaper or maybe industrial-strength floor cleaner will remove the suntan lotion from our skin. Maybe it's because we have to use so much of it to protect ourselves from the sun, I'm not sure. Either way, we're at wits end as to how to remove it and then get our sunless tanner to work again. If you have ANY ideas or tips to share, we would GREATLY appreciate the help. Thank you all and best wishes! - Eddie |

Re: How to Completely Remove Suntan Lotion Prior to Sunless Tanning (help! help!)
Very simple fix, DO NOT USE PETRO BASED PRODUCTS. I can PROMISE that SPF has PETROLEUM or MINERAL OIL BASE.
(no real manu would put a FAKE number like SPF 50 on it or sell outside a tanning salon) This is a GARBAGE ingredient for real. Mineral oil is the left over oil after distilling crude oil. No only will subbing this product with a real SPF help the sunless tan, it'll help get you a REAL tan and have ingredients that are GOOD for the skin. FYI, SPF 50 is fake. There is NO SPF over 30. ALSO, SPF does NOT help prevent skin cancer. ONLY quality lotions that are vitamin enriched to help fuel the skin will help prevent skin issues. Hope this helps! |

Re: How to Completely Remove Suntan Lotion Prior to Sunless Tanning (help! help!)
There is a a primer product by california tan that is used before mystic tan to get rid of any lotion you have on your skin before going in the mystic (sunless) tan. its similar to a baby wipe but its made to prime the skin before using a self tanner. also it depends what self tanner you use. st tropez makes a really good self tanning line, you can get it at sephora or some bath and body works, but they have an exfoliator step 1 product that helps with that too. i personally tan indoors and outdoors, but i also use the jergens lotion and even after the beach or using regular lotion i never have a problem.

Re: How to Completely Remove Suntan Lotion Prior to Sunless Tanning (help! help!)
Ummm -- thanks, but none of these replies has helped much. And with regard to response #2, a couple of quick comments:
1. SPF50 suntan lotion does indeed exist and is quite popular in the states. 2. SPF50 does indeed protect you better from the sun than does an SPF30 lotion does. This is not my opinion, it is demonstrated fact. High SPF mineral based sunblocks have repeatedly been shown in hard research studies to reduce the risk of DNA damage that leads to skin cancer. See, for example, the article "A mineral sunscreen affords genomic protection against ultraviolet (UV) B and UVA radiation: in vitro and in situ assays" by Cayrol, Sarraute, Tarroux, Redoules, Charveron and Gall in the British Journal of Dermatology, Volume 141, Number 2, August 1999, pp. 250-258. 3. The use of mineral oil is safe. It is used in just about every hand and face lotion made in every country on every continent. It is just about the most tested and trusted ingredient there is when it comes to skin care. Read the labels of your favorite products folks. I posted my original question simply to see if anybody had any good suggestions for totally REMOVING waterproof sunblock prior to sunless tanning. Try it sometime --- spend 4-5 days at the beach, putting on SPF45-50 waterproof suntan lotion and reapplying it a few times during the day. Then, at the end of the 5 days, try to use sunless tanner. Let me know how you make out. I'll make a prediction: nothing, absolutely nothing will happen --- you will not tan one bit. Hence my question... Still hoping someone has some good suggestions or experience in this area. Thanks all! |

Honestly Fast Eddie, you're SOL. You want to look tan when you go to the beach and protect your skin: get a tan before you go. Hope this helps. Good luck.
