Just seeking opinions:
I am currently in the process of having a 100% natural solution made. I.e No nasty chemicals, not even a 1% preservative, nada. True 100% natural. Now, I think this is an easy sale (I mean, who wants to be spray people with chemicals all day, AND be breathing it). I looked at the competition and they mostly contain some really nasty stuff (parabens, suspected cancer causers etc) so the question is: Am I mad? Or is the sunless tanning market full of peeps who don't care what they put on their bodies? Give me your opinions before I spend every last penny I have on developing this!! ps yes the quality is ace, thank you. |

How about REALITY as in, the reason preservatives are put into things is so they don't go bad after 2 minutes...one of spary tans biggest problems is solution going bad.
I think you are slightly exaggerating just how "nasty" some of the ingredients are. Most things can be considered toxic at high quantities. |

There is a new 100% natural preservative, which has been tested against parabens on a 4/5 ratio and come out better, so basically, yes there is a preservative, but for once it doesn't have to be artificial.
Parabens have been linked alot to cancer of late (i.e been found in the tumours removed from women with breast cancer) and quite frankly, as someone who has lost two family members that way, I'm not prepared to take the risk especially given that upto 60% of what you spray on your skin is absorbed. However, I fully take your point on board - just how nasty is it? I don't know - I just know I personally am not prepared to risk it (or skin cancer) and so a safe alternative has become a bit of a holy grail. You can check out yourself what the EWG (environmental working group) has to say on some cosmetic ingredients. At the end of the day we don't even know for sure that DHA is 100% safe so its all relative. http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep/chemhealtheffect.php?chem_id=4397 |

Solution is absorbed only into the outermost layer of the skin. That's why it fades quickly. Tattoo ink is much, much more invasive and has never been FDA approved. So, solution and/or lotions are not absorbed into the blood stream, thereby causing tumors and such. (JMO)

I agree that is very important to check your ingredients to see what goes onto your skin. I would do more research on this 100% natural preservative. For instance Grapeseed extract can be used as a natural preservative, yet it gives a very short shelf life. You would be in alot pf trouble if clients end up being sprayed with a solution that is off. DHA itself is not natural, but rather derived from natural suagrcane or beet. You must be careful in saying it is 100% natural when in actual fact it is not.

Jen - I see your point about uppermost layer of skin - but realistically, how many clients really do injest a small amount of solution (even given barrier cream on lips and noseplugs...which few salons really use properly)? I still find it a bit dubious - especially with an all-over body application and the possibility of a small cut anywhere on that body.
Miss Vani-T a question for you then - don't Vani-T products claim to be 99% natural? With an 8% DHA concentration how is that so? |

Here's the way I see it regarding ingestion of solution...
Most folks ingest waaaaay more harmful fumes while simply driving behind other's exhaust fumes, you know? If breathing the solution is going to harm someone, it's most likely going to be me, who is in and out of the spray room for eight hours, spraying numerous bodies - not necessarily the client who's in there for five minutes while the spray is actually being sprayed, you know? I have a spray booth that has three exhaust fans, and it really does pull any excess overspray away from myself and the client. Also, in recent months I've readjusted my spray gun to spray as minimally as possible and still give great coverage - that helps~ Small cuts...A lot of my clients do come in with scrapes and such, but I always ask them if they have any open wounds I should know about...something scabbed over is not necessarily my concern as far as applying solution to that area for infection, but rather the "new" scab will turn CARAAAAZZAAAAY dark if not covered with vaseline or another barrier before spraying. So far hasn't been an issue. Jen www.abtan.com |
