I think it has got a lot to do with where Australia is positioned in terms of the equator. If you look at our indigenous peoples they have black skin! Most of us come from fair skinned euro backgrounds ( a high percentage of Irish) and quite simply our skin was not made to live in this country! If you sunbake in the Australian sun you are very likely to get sun cancer unless you are naturally olive. We get burnt just driving around in our cars and even tan through 30+ sunscreen! I have lived in the states and got a tan there but in Australia I fry. Sunless is the way to go here as Miss Vani-T stated. Not only that but solariums are getting regular bashings in all major Australian newspapers and the cancer council is pushing for new legislation to ban them. Your comment about the nobody knowing any better is definetly valid but we still have a high percentage of 20 somthings with skin cancer and melanoma.

Add to that teenagers in Australia getting skin cancer and these are the children whose parents religiously protected their childrens skin. Our children even have to wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from the harsh sun. We have that bronzed Aussie image and beautiful beaches etc. pounded into us on a daily basis. I am olive-skinned and lived in the UK for 6 years and could go so, so brown in the mild British sun but here, as mentioned above, I get burnt in 5 minutes flat in the springtime. NeonBeach.... what possible gain can the government get from scaring people out of the sun? Skin cancer doesn't take 20-25 years to show up... one serious sunburn is all it takes! And, much to people's dismay, people are still out there cooking themselves... and how the **** does sunless tanning make matters worse? Your comments don't make any sense at all.

"Skin cancer doesn't take 20-25 years to show up... one serious sunburn is all it takes!"

It doesn't develop overnight after one sunburn, that's for sure. ~shaking head~

The scary part of this is that you are both right. Sunless is becoming more important because of the FDA,AMA and probably other US and foreigh government agencies tendancy to tell us what is good and bad for us. On the other hand, The effects of UV is also beneficial.

I do know that Australia is hotter than **** and you will burn faster than you can shake a stick. I also know that you may get cancer (eventually) from the sun. It is still being researched if you have to have the genes or not. You also get cancer from smoking and other external ways. You get wrinkles from the sun as well as smoking. Smoking also gives you backaches.

I promote sunless as an alternative. I do not say it is better or worse than UV. Just an alternative method of tanning.

Engfant is correct and also not correct in his Statement "In order for a spray tan session to work correctly and evenly you need more prep and down time than UV tanning by A LONG SHOT. Just gunna pop in for a spray? I don't know about your area but the people that come in here do this thing called WORK and throwing work clothes over a body that's just come out of a spray booth is gunna look REAL nice on the skin and clothes".
Depending upon the manufactured booth, the results will vary. For example, I know of a booth that will have you in and out withing 5 minutes. There is no worry of putting on clothes and returning to work as long as your job does not involve sweating. That is the key. Sunless requires you to stay dry for at least 4 hours. In that case the "Down Time" is longer.

I have women in office jobs come in on Friday noon, get tanned in my sunless booth, then go back to work. After work, they shower, get dressed and out on the town. No streaks, no mess on their clothes. I do know of other companies that use larger amounts of spray and if you are not careful, you will be streaked.

Anyway. Points to both sides.

True True I think that is the best way to look at it because at the end of the day its up to the customer and most people have a preference. The problem here is that most Australians don't have the tanning genes as I stated above but its part of our culture to be tanned! This country is a fry. I would say that in a few hundred years we will eventually evolve and get darker skin haha but at the moment sunless is a great option for many Australians who can't tan in the sun or are sick of getting cancers cut outa there bodies. Many solarium owners arn't strict enough and u constantly see people come out with burnt skin and that is probably one of the reasons they get a bad name. If u have a nice olive complexion and monitor your tanning time than great for you I actually wish I could do that, but I can't and neither can many Australians so spray tanning gives them the chance to look tanned.
