We live in an area where Mystic has a stronghold on UV, and there is one airbrush salon. We are considering opening a salon where the focus is on a UV-free spray booth with the possibility of having an airbrush for mobile work. We would augment the spraying with other products such as lotions, possibly simple silver jewelry, candles, etc.

We have found a large hole in the area where there are no tanning whatsoever for a 3-4 mile diameter, all residential, all middle to middle-upper class. There are several retail spaces abailable in this area, ranging from $19/sf/yr up to $40/sf/yr at a new *very* upscale retail development. These spaces range from 900sf to 1400 sf. Since the spray booth and ancillary items wouldn't take up too much space, we are trying to come up with ideas for the rest of the space.

Based on the low end ($19/sf/yr), we figure we would need to have 6-9 sprays per day to break even. This is with me being the only employee, for now.

Any thoughts as to what were thinking, ideas for the rest of the space, etc., would be appreciated.

Thanks!

As long as you make use of the other space with retail, this should go fine, I've had several customers do Sunless only, If you need any help please let me know

we have one in our area that has the mist on unit, They been open a couple of years.
So, I guess they must be making it. I thought they were crazy to even try it with just
spray on tanning. I guess I was wrong. They were smart and did some marketing with
a few big stores in the area. It's appears to have worked for them.

Personally I think that would be hard. Unless you had a very specific segment to deliver into. I think that the beauty of sunless is it's complimentary relationship with UV tanning. There is another service, that of toning and highlights which is a spa service, typically performed with airbrush . Make sure you are aware of the difference in these services, they are very different.

My suggestion would be a couple of base UV beds to do just that, lay down a base. Then go with a sunless unit to give the client that punch for important events. You'll have the cross sell which is so important, and you'll open up your marketing to limitless potential.

There are a couple of additional services/products you can add, but they will be highly dependant on your local demographics. Remember that your business is all about people looking good. A solid marketing plan will oncover local wants.

Oh yea, I forgot (actually I take it for granted), in regards to Sunless units. When you consider your offering of sunless services, there should be only one consideration, that you deliver the best service available, consistently. In my mind there is only one machine that stands to the challange and that is the Mystic.

Well, I saw this display once that put it all into focus. It was a little black billard ball being sprayed with solution . You may have seen it at one of the trade shows. Before electrostatics then with. Amazing properties of attraction. A second consideration is that at the couple of Magic locations here in town, the salons warn you first that the results are not always predictable. I don't sell any sunless, and have no reason to favour one over the other. But I do recognize advantages in technology, and the electrostatics are quite simply a wonderful improvement to the basic spray on process.

That's the tech side, now let's talk marketing. Who has developed the public awareness in this sunless craze?. Which brand name is synonomous with sunless tanning?. Don't get me wrong, there is room for others. In every market people like choice.

I agree with you on the marketing, but I also get a lot of feedback from people that have tried both machines, usually the Magic favors better, but I hear a lot of great feedback on the Mystic also.

I bought my Magic Tan from Buddy and people love it. By the way he is great to work with. I even get it every weekend. That way I can be a walking ad for my salon. I have a very small salon, two beds and a spray booth. I stay busy!

I think that it would have it's up's and down's, I am from a small town and from what I hear alot of people like the spary tan and then there's a few that hate it. I personally did not mind it, I got it done at a tanning convention. But you might think about purchasing one or two tanning beds as well!!
