Best mobile airbrush tanning equipment? Is Fantasy Tan the best?

I am looking around for equipment to start my mobile airbrush tanning business. I am really interested in Fantasy Tan and Aviva Labs. Fantasy Tan just seems so expensive, is this because of the HTAS technology? I like Fantasy Tan because I like the idea of having two different guns for larger areas and contouring, and I like Aviva Labs because I like the fact that it's all natural. But FT is more than double what AL is. Is it worth it?

What are some other companies you would recommend? What do you use? Thanks!

Re: Best mobile airbrush tanning equipment? Is Fantasy Tan the best?

Hey there! I will you you the most honest review as I can seems how I bought my Fantasy Tan equipment a 3 years ago.

IT IS EXPENSIVE!!!! Maybe the price is high for the equipment but in all honesty back then I was a woman with this bright idea to start a sunless business and I needed a lot of information. Every equipment I researched seemed to have just come with a DVD as an instructional device. Fantasy Tan did send someone out to me to train me. This was comforting and probably the ONLY outstanding factor that got me to make the purchase. Everything went well with the training BUT there was a lot I could have never anticipated to ask my trainer. Cleaning the gun was something my DAD (a custom painter for cars) ended up teaching me. The girl from FT just told me to run a mixture of alcohol and destilled water thru it. Anyways I have never had any major issues with the equipment and it sprays quite well and I do have to say that I LOVE having both the gun and the airbrush right there ready to go. A ton of people will tell you that you can make the same machine for $500 and thou that may be true personally I would have NO clue how to begin that process. FT also sends you a bunch of solution, retail products, posters and a bunch of other stuff that helps with promoting your products.

Now the solution is expensive too!! Oh holy moly! But I could ALWAYS 100% guarentee NO ORANGE! the solution is very light on the DHA so I was able to mix their BoTan With The sun Spray 50/50 and it was a GREAT tan on everyone. Especially my fairest (red head) clients. Now you do have to use more solution then you would a lot of other brands which in my experience cuts into your profit and restricts your price and promotional prices to get clients in the door. I have also noticed here in Southern Cali that the girls just don't want to look tan (natural looking) they want a deep dark rich color and that is not Fantasy Tan by any means. It is a fabulous tan for brides, briadal parties and Light skinned clients or dark skinned clients that want to even their tone and give a nice burst of color. for the most part I have been OK with them but now that my warrenty is up I will be exploring other options. I will ALWAYS keep some in stock for my lightest clients because I wouldn't mess with perfection there. :)

some things to know:

they say if you run another solution thru your equipment while its under warrenty it voids the warrenty.

Competition is tough and with a high priced solution and equipment unless you are a spa that can charge 50.00 + a tan making your money back and a profit will take some time.

FT claims they will list you on their salon locator on their website BUT in relaity I was never listed until I called them, Then they added me but I have been lost again and when I addressed it in an email while plaing an order that question went unanswered. I have only received 1 referral from FT or the salon locator but that may just be because I vanished from the website and/or because So CAL is not as familiar with the brand.

Hope this info helps!!!

ps~ the retail products are pretty good and can bring in some extra money if you can push the products

Jenny

Re: Best mobile airbrush tanning equipment? Is Fantasy Tan the best?

Jenny, thank you so much for taking the time to write all that! Some of the info in the e-mail the Fantasy Tan rep sent me said that because of the technology of the machine, you will actually use less solution.. so I'm glad I know that in fact I'd use more solution.

I'm not too worried about my clients wanting a deeper tan. I live in RI, so they probably wouldn't - but you never know since I've never done this before. What other companies are you looking at? Do you know anything about Infinity Sun?

Thanks again for your review, it was very helpful! :)

Re: Best mobile airbrush tanning equipment? Is Fantasy Tan the best?

No problem. I was so lost and didn't have these chat communities when I started. LOL

I looked into Infiniti Sun as well as SunFx. The 3 companies are the same I looked at and to be honest they are like the NAME BRAND companies for SPA's This is very important to know because the pricing is really geared towards those spas that can charge more and feel "special" getting these name brand products..... If you are going mobile I would really consider a Maxi Mist or a smaller more portable unit. My FT sure it's on wheels but just wait until you have to lug that thing up stairs and in and out of your car with a tent solution and everything else.. Its a beast compared to the smaller portable units. Luckily now there are a lot more training classes offered all over the place and even certifications you can get. I would say go with a smaller cheaper unit to start order some samples from the solution companies and after you take one of the day training classes throw a tan party at your place and give all your friends free tans and test all those solutions.... get feed back from everyone and go from there. :)

I think looking back infiniti sun, sun fx and FT all are great in the sense that they have a NO brainer built business. you don't have to test a bunch of solutions and they are name brands so IF people know about them then you COULD have some clients looking specifically for that brand (but its rare) My experience with FT hasn't been BAD but I think that testing products is part of what makes your business unique. People will come to you for the COLOR that YOU provide at the best price. with these companies you will be limited. I went 3 years loving my FT solutions but I have read so many posts about tons of wonderful solutions that I was never even able to try. I was also seriously confused because FT told me I would use less solution as well but being NEW to the business I just thought I used less but reading a lot of posts here and on onther website I found people were using 2-3ozs of solution for an average client and I was using 4-6ozs. recently my hubby got into body building and I had to do his tan. I ordered liquid sun rayz which is competition solution and the way it went on really made me realize that FT was a very THIN solution compared to many. don't know if it is so you use more and buy more or if that is just the way it is in order to acheive the color but whatever,. I will see next week when my samples come in. :)

I am currently waiting samples from
React Cosmetics
South Seas
Sjolie

Re: Best mobile airbrush tanning equipment? Is Fantasy Tan the best?

I am going to be mobile, but also will be in a salon a few days a week. I am actually starting off in the salon and hopefully booking clients for weddings, dances, events, etc. because of my salon clientele. Do you still think I should opt for the smaller, lightweight equipment? I love love love the look of the Infinity Sun case, especially the pink one!

Have you used airbrush makeup with your Fantasy Tan system? Would it be fairly easy to use for someone who is inexperienced in airbrush makeup?

Re: Best mobile airbrush tanning equipment? Is Fantasy Tan the best?

I checked out the new infinity Sun equipment. It is cute.... But you need to make sure that it isn't too big. You may find yourself tanning in very small areas being Mobile. Have you had an Infinity Sun Tan done before? What is your opinion of the solution? Knowing what I know now I would tell you to find the perfect solution FIRST then worry about the equipment. I read on one of the posts here that Infinity Sun won't send out samples of the solution. Not a great thing if you are going to invest a nice amount of money into the equipment. I guess what I am trying to say is that you want to use products that you can stand behind and feel confident with more then the "type" of equipment. If you have had an Infinity Tan and LOVE it to peices then Go for it.... Same with FT. But those companies will lock you in to only using their solutions or risk voiding warrenties. If you go with a small unaffiliated equipment the sky is the limit and there is solution galore in the industry worth trying. :)

I never got into the AB makeup. It seems extremely easy with the equipment color matching would be the only real work :)

Re: Best mobile airbrush tanning equipment? Is Fantasy Tan the best?

Thanks for all of this very useful information. I'm just starting my search for mobile airbrush equipment.
I'm also looking at IS and FT. I just really like the thought of the carring cases on wheels. Are these the only companies that make this? I haven't seen another company that does.
You say that it's hard to make a profit b-cuz of the extra solution u use: if u don't mind- how much are you charging for your service? The rep at FT told me that my cost for each treatment would cost around $3.00???
So happy to have found this site- lots of great info.
Thanks for all of the help in advance!

Hi ckalina,

I charge anywhere from $30-$35. I started my prices at $40 but with the economy everyone has been lowering their prices.

The 3.00 a tan would be ideal but that is pretty much assuming you buy your solution by the gallon and only use 3ozs per client. I found that to get a great color and it gets dark enough to last it was more like 4-6ozs depending on the size of the person and how fair their skin is. so once you factor in your cost for gloves, hair nets, solution + gas and travel time it all adds up. I am not saying by any means that FT isn't worth it, I just think it is geard towards Spa's and Salons that can charge $50+ per tan.

as far as the case on wheels.... It is an air compressor so yes it does make it easier but for example the Maxi mist and the Mini mist are a lot more compact and lighter so the whole case on wheels thing is not necessary. I actually found that it is a headache to lug that big old compressor around. Think about flights of stairs and lugging it in and out of your car all day long. No bueno.... BUT if you plan on AB make up and AB tatoos and the other services you can offer with a compressor then yes having the compressor in a case on wheels is nice. :) If you are only doing tanning then it is also important to think about back up systems. If you spend all the $$$ with FT or IS what happens if your system has a problem? I know with some of the smaller systems you can have 2 or more for way less. I will say though that my FT has not had any major problems. :)
