Solaris 442 Canopy Fails to start.

I have a solaris 442 which has some problems.. I thought that it was just the lights in the canopy so I replaced them and replaced the starters. Unfortunately that did not work. The tubes attempt to light the starter filaments glow and then some of them go open. In fact I would dare say that nothing seems to work in the canopy (high pressure, Florescent, fans or accent lights) except the timer.

I tested the voltage going to the bed and it does not seem to be the problem. I even reversed the hot (220) lines in case one leg was weak to see if it would reverse the problem with the bed not lighting up. No use.

I went through again and replaced the bulbs which had open filaments and again some of them tried to start but would not. I checked the power deck to see if there was anything obvious and even swapped some ballast/cap from the top bed to the bottom bed to see if that would change the outcome of the situation. The ballast for the canopy would activate a bank of lights in the lower bed.

I am completely at a standstill as to what the deal is with this bed. Any expert opinions as to what would be the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Solaris 442 Canopy Fails to start.

DO NOT POWER UP THAT BED! Odds are the large cables that attach are bad, not connected right. When they fail they can cause a fire or melt the connectors. I have seen this design flaw a few times now. It happens from the bed being opened and closed. Or if a new install, the connectors were cross-threaded. These connectors may not be available anymore.

The connectors are not very good and unthread a little. This makes a poor connection which results in arching.

Remove all connectors and inspect them very, very carefully before you power that thing up again.

Keep us updated!!

Re: Solaris 442 Canopy Fails to start.

Thanks! The connectors look like they are snug, I was going to run a ohm meter from the plug connections to the power deck and see if there is a broken wire or something equally stupid. The bed used to work before I disassembled it and moved it to its current location. SO you might be right as far as connections are concerned. With as many wires that go to it I would figure some of the lights would fire up so if thats the case it must be some heavy gauge wires that are not connected.

Will let you know what I discover.

Make sure that the plugs are in the right spots. The plugs will fit in all spots as the plugs are the same but only work in one spot. Usually marked with a colored dot.

Re: Solaris 442 Canopy Fails to start.

After numerous starters and 36 blown out bulbs, problem was solved. It turns out that the canopy plugs will plug into the wrong sockets. No they weren't color coded like the lower deck plugs were.
I would consider that a serious design flaw based on that they could have made the plugs mated differently. The lower decks plugs are different pin patterns so why not the upper?
Anyway.. I appreciate the help it was starting to hit my crazy button.
