Why don't they make reflective HP lamps. Wouldn't it make more sense than having it in a reflective cassette. The only reason I could come up with is the heat. Brian speak your wisdom!
I know with tube lamps, reflective ones are, I think 50% more powerful than non reflective.

Reflective LP tubes will usually have about 20-25% more total UV output than the same lamp without a reflector.

I don't think it would be possible to put a Reflector in an HP lamp. HP lamps typically have a wide beam spread with reflector behind it. If the reflector was in the lamp you would get a much more narrow beam of UV & it would most likely cause major heat issues & hot spots.

What would you use? A light would just pass through a mirror finish. It would also impede output. The heat would just burn it off too.

An HP system is just that, a system. It uses the reflector and a filterglass to render the final output and it is just one lamp that covers a wide area whereas tubes are packed together so the reflector just forces the output in one direction.

Think of HP like a headlight on your car. Look at the broad cast of the light. It uses the reflector to amplify the strength and pattern. Take the bulb out of the headlight assembly and the focus diminishes quite considerably but the consumption remains the same.

If you covered the back of the lamp it would not be able to use the reflector to maximize output.

Lets not make this complicated. LP Lamps are low energy requiring the lamps to be set close together. HP lamps are high energy causing the ray to travel further. In order to disburse they light over a larger area a reflective cassette is used. If you did put a reflector in a HP lamp the light would only disburse forward making it necessary to have lamps right next to each other. This can't be done for many reasons, heat, cost.
