This is the purpose when they are applied in making DC power supplies to even out the ripple from converting AC to DC. Only a battery will provide 100% clean flat DC current.

There are different power supplies and the better setups have more components making them more expensive.

The simplest is the half wave rectifier which is a single diode in line with the AC to make it only flow one direction but it will still have the top half of the sine wave making in noisy for components that require clean DC. THis is fine for battery chargers and things like that but would give noise in audio and digital applications.

The next is the full wave rectifier which uses two diodes, one in each direction on each of the two AC conductors. This will even out the sine wave ripple more than the half wave.

The next is the full wave bridge rectifier which uses four diodes in a diomond pattern to more even out the ripple.

The next is the full wave bridge with a regulator. The regulator will provide rock solid voltage output even though the input is fluctuating. This is the best power supply for low noise applications.

Now in all of these applications, adding a capacitor to the output will further remove the ripple from the sine wave as when the sine wave is ramping down the cap is taking over and supplying the needed voltage to keep the voltage up and when the voltage is up then the cap is charging to get ready for the next dip in voltage.

No matter how good a power supply is, it will never be 100% flat DC. Only a battery can do that.

This statement is false.

Brian, is your doctorate degree in electrical engineering? You're amazing! What is your education?
