new! conditioning skin for exposure???

Firstly I am new and I apologize if this is the wrong place.
I was wondering about conditioning fair skin. I do not really care about being tan for the cosmetic aspect of it. I have really light skin that freckles and burns fairly easily.
I recently enlisted in the Marines and know that Ill be outside alot during mct and other training and probably will go overseas to Afghanistan or Iraq. What can I do to condition my skin to be able to be exposed all the time? Right now if im outside for 4 or 5 hours in the direct light (I live in the Florida keys..) Then I get burned.
Can I just go outside for periods of time and hopefully tan and freckle until I can be out under the sun for a really long time or is there another way of doing it? I do not want to go get sunburn after sunburn until It takes 18 hours to get burned.
I don't really know how to go about this or who to even ask but I was hoping this might be a good place. thx

I think the best thing to do is visit your local salon and have them guide you. They should recommend a high quality tanning lotion and build your tan very slowly and consistently. I'm not a fan of SPF I would wear clothing and hats but you can certainly look into some sunblock just make sure you get some unprotected responsible sun exposure instead of zero.

Best of luck to you. :)
