Moisturizer question

Okay so I know after I get out the shower I'm supposed to put lotion on everywhere to help keep my tan healthy. So I was wondering what are some good lotions to use? I've been using Banana Boat Moisturizing Aloe AfterSun lotion....is that one any good?

Re: Moisturizer question

Moisturize 2X daily.

One of my favorites is Swedish Beauty's Endless. There are many good moisturizers and results will be different with each person.

Stay out of the retail giants, and go to a respectable local tanning salon. The staff of a GOOD salon will be able to point you in the right direction.

OMG... Banana Boat? Seriously? Read the ingredients, I prey it does not contain mineral oil. I also hope you are not using any of the low grade goo in a tanning bed.

The salon you go to probably stocks a good moisturizer geared toward tanners. They wont bleach the tan out and have the right ingredients to help you develop a better tan in conjunction with a good tanning lotion.

Banana Boat was all I had in the house so I've just been using that. I didn't know it was bad to use. I use Designer Skin Believe in me for my tanning lotion.

I just read the ingredients and it DOES contain mineral oil. Why is that bad to use? I've only been tanning for a month so I'm new to all of this.

Mineral oil is a CARCINOGEN.

Also it dries out your skin BIG time. Have you skipped a day putting it on? Most notice when they forget to apply a bad moisturizer their skin feels dry and tight during the first few hours of the day. By the way, does it have an SPF rating too?

Read all of this and then decide if you want mineral oil (aka baby oil) on your skin. Skin feels nice when you first apply it since it pulls water to the surface of the skin (dries out).

What are you using for a tanning lotion in the bed?

unity 12-08-2008 04:58 PM

Re: Moisturizer question

Ok, looked it up. At least it has no SPF. That would totally negate tanning.

Hempz Herbal by Supre is a great moisturizer. Also Total Luxury by Devoted Creations. Either can be found at your finer tanning salons.

We sell 2 Designer Skin moisturizers that customers absolutely love. Angel and Undercover Angel. The difference between them is the fragrance. Angel is Kiwi Pear and Unercover Angel is Fresh Clean fragrance. But my customers and staff swear by this stuff. I personally use Designer Skin Magnificio. It cost a lil bit more than the other stuff, but definately worth it.

Speaking of moisturizers, has anyone tried the new one from LA Ink? If so, what did you think of it?

My advice is, stay away form any product that has methylparaben as well as the above mentioned mineral oil. in it……

In a 2006 study in Toxicology, cultured keratinocytes (human skin cells) subjected to practical levels of methylparaben (a preservative used in skin care products including moisturizers and tanning lotions) and cultured in methylparaben-containing solution for 24 hours were more subject to UVB-damage than cells that were not cultured in methylparaben.

I still haven't been able to score a sample of that. It wasn't included in the samples when we went to the AG presentation or when my disty sent samples - I'm beginning to think they don't have samples!

I have one customer from Costa Rica who buys 4 bottles of Angel at least 2X a year and takes them "home" with her. She doesn't ever tan - just comes in and buys the lotion :) And CT Total Immersion flies off the shelf.

My staff had tried this and thought that it did a good job of moisturizing but said the fragrance was horrible and would not recommend it

So what's a good tanning lotion/moisturizer without methylparaben? I was gonna buy some Hempz Herbal Moisturizer from Amazon since it's well reviewed but apparently it has methylparaben so scratch that. I'm fair skinned and the last thing I want to do is increase my risk of UVB damage. Does DS Angel have it? I couldn't find the ingredients online.

edit:
Was searching around and discovered this interesting article about parabens and other potential health risks (references your 2006 Toxicology study):

Randrage why are you looking to buy lotion on Amazon instead of going to your local salon for professional advice? :)

eileen 03-05-2009 10:24 PM

Re: Moisturizer question

Just about every professional line of lotions offered at salons now have a paraben free tanning lotion to offer their clients.

Ok thanks for the info. I'm new to indoor tanning and I had heard Amazon prices were better but I haven't really looked into it locally yet.

Most reputable lotion manufacturers won't gaurantee the product unless it's sold by a professioinal salon. :)

Yes, check with your local salon. Supre carries a Tattoo stick with 30 spf, Australian Gold carries a balm stick (face-guard) also, inexpensive too
(approx $7-11).

Re: Moisturizer question

I agree with excusemesir, Supre's HEMPZ moisturizers, to me, are the BEST moisturizer(s) I have ever used and I have been tanning outdoors for over 30 years and indoor tanning for over 26 years andhave tried many, many moisturizers.

First I tried the ones that were made by the tanning oils sold at the drug stores, like Hawaiian tropic, Banana Boat, Panama jack, but when I started to tan indoors I still used a lotion off the drugstore shelf, but I made sure it had Aloe in it and also did NOT have mineral oil, but the majority of them did have mineral oil in them.

When the tanning industry first came out with the first VERY GOOD indoor tanning lotion from Cal Tan "Rage ", I started to buy better moisturizers from the stores, like St Ives, but it was about 9 years ago I came across HEMPZ at a tanning salon I was going to and I purchased a sample and ever since that is the ONLY moisturizer I buy and use. I use it for my body and also my face.

Since I am geting older, I have been using the HEMPZ " Age Defying " moisturizer. It has the best moisturizing ingredients in it... Aloe, Hemp Seed extract and Hemp seed oil, vitamins A,C, and E ( which are anti-oxidants ), Shea Butter, etc...to help combat and reverse the signs of skin damage from UV light exposure and to also help tighten the skin and help fill in/rid fine lines and wrinkles.

It has a nice clean scent and states it moisturizes for 24 hours.

If in doubt, if your tanning salon carries samples of moisturizers , buy them and try them out and choose the one you like, but I can just about guarantee that you would love HEMPZ moisturizer.

I hope this helps :icon_wink:
Have a great week !!!

I love Ds Enamor for a moisturizer! dlk500 we carry tattoo by supre it is great for protecting tatoos and customers love it!

The new LA ink is a good lotion for the price. I love the way the colorbrite brightens up the tatoos.
My favorite daily moisturizer is definitly DS enamor but I use the Hempz body butter for winter for the extra dry skin. My mom uses the Hempz age defying because it doesnt leave her feeling greasy when she is in the heat of summer at work.

This thread is from 2008, but I had to respond to the above poster.

No way, on the petroleum products. Do not fall for marketing gimmicks. Petroleum is a crude oil biproduct, so you definitely don't want that on your skin and it will in effect coat it giving a false sense of moisturizing when in reality it is suffocating it, and drying it out even more.

Go to your local professional tanning salon!

I apply any moisturizing products only after washing up with shungite water. If you're curious, here's an article about it https://shungite-c60.com/what-is-shungite/
