I am a seasonal employee of a larger tanning salon in a mid size city. It has been a policy of the salon owner that tanners may not tan more than once in a 24 hour time period. Say they come in at 5 pm one day to tan then come in again the next morning at 9. She would consider that to be double exposure and has said that we need to explain to the tanner the facts of safe tanning. Possibly we could cut the tanner's time in half for that day's tanning to avoid over exposure. The clients are surely NOT liking this. Many have said they have done this for years and have not had a problem before. Of course, this is my first season as a NEW seasonal employee and the clients think it's me doing this to them.
Here's the deal. Altho this has always been a policy and the owner herself has enforced it, I've witnessed, she has once again requested that employees start watching the records as tanners come in and enforcing it. Some of the regular employees that have never enforced it are all up in arms about it as well and have sided with the tanners. So someone tell me just for my information. What's the deal with the amount of exposure you can safely have in a 24 hour time period. |

Re: Number of times tanning in 24 hrs?
I bet its state law there. Besides, you work for them, follow THEIR rules. If you were working for me you would be out a job right now just for questioning it.
As for how much tanning is safe in 24 hours. Which skin type? Good luck!

Re: Number of times tanning in 24 hrs?
some states are regulated and you CAN'T let them tan in less then 24 hrs. most software can block out the tan if it's less then 24 hrs. this would be the easiest way to explain it to the customer and not let it be your fault. tell them your insurance company made the change and the software system won't let you overide it.

Re: Number of times tanning in 24 hrs?
Dang! I was asking a question about opinion on safe exposure, because no it's not a law in this state. And I AM the one following the rules. Ya'll are kind of quick to slap someone down on assumption I was questioning my owner.

Re: Number of times tanning in 24 hrs?
My employee worked for a large chain here in FL and she said that she never explained the rule to clients or had any software prohibit people from tanning inside of the 24 hrs. I'm sure she has to be wrong some how. I can't imagine that the FLDOH would allow them to pull that off. But she's pretty sharp, so who knows.

Re: Number of times tanning in 24 hrs?
The reason for the 24 hour wait is because within that time is most likely when a sunburn can occur. The melanocytes are still producing melanin for 24 – 48 hours after the body has been exposed to UV-light. It is best to wait at least 24 hours between sessions to avoid overexposure.

Re: Number of times tanning in 24 hrs?
Kay is right. We are in an unregulated state but we still have this in our client release form and go over it with new clients.

Re: Number of times tanning in 24 hrs?
Wait a minute. Only ONCE every 24hours???? I thought the rule was you had to get ALL the tanning done within 24hrs.
Now you tell me. Like a kabob over here.
