Rosacea and UV

The State of FL lists that clients with this condition only tan if they have a written note from their doctor. I'm assuming that they are referring to clients that are on a medication treatment.

I have done a search and it seems that UV helps the condition.

What's your policy? Most of the people that have asked aren't on meds for it.

Re: Rosacea and UV

I have Rosacea, and I really don't see much of an improvement from when I didn't tan. But, it's less noticable because I'm darker and it hides it a bit. But, if I don't wear foundation, people always ask if I'm burned. Which is not good for a salon owner, so needless to say... I never go out without makeup.

We're not a regulated state though... so we haven't had an issue with it.

i really dont believe (just assuming here) that there is a medication for rosacea. Gonna do some searching, I too have it on my cheeks, make sure you tell clients NEVER to put a tingle on their face, as this can also cause it. In my case I do believe tanning does help it, as it does darken the skin and make the broken blood vessels look less noticeable.

Re: Rosacea and UV

Hey - yeah there are treatments. Metronidazole is a common one. So is tetracycline (which makes someone photosensitive) and some topical steroids (not long term - and they thin the skin so prob not good to tan w/ these. besides, they prevent 1/2 the tanning process anyway) -- what they are on depends on the type of rosacea and severity.

You read that UV helps rosacea? Everything I read says that, for most rosacea patients, UV tends to aggravate it (google "tanning and rosacea),. There is therapy called PUVA which includes psoralens (chemicals that absorb the light) with UVA, but this is for eczema and psoriasis -- not rosacea.

Honestly, I'm surprised they even want to tan w/ rosacea. IMO, they should be able to tan w/ sunblock on their nose & areas of sensitivity (in low power beds to see how they react first) - and then go from there. I think, even w/ rosacea, if you start very slow, you can get a tan - it's just very hard to get an even tan w/o aggrivating the issue.

Re: Rosacea and UV

My client, Gary, has Rosacea and tans twice a week to minimize it. He is not tan, so its not like the tan is covering it up. He only goes 10 minutes in a 20 min bed.
