Rep Power: 0 | First, a vent . . . OK, maybe it will work if I only post part of it . . . I went to a salon near my home yesterday just to get one tan and try it out. I've been tanning before, but it was a few years ago and in a completely different state. I have Type III or IV skin, but I haven't been in the sun in a LONG time, so I appear very pale. When I was younger I used to get very brown and I rarely burned, which is why I say I'm III or IV. Anyway, I went to the salon and told the girl at the desk these things and she started me on a 32-bulb bed (15 min. max) for 8 minutes. I was slightly concerned about this because when I started tanning a few years ago, they started me out at 8 minutes, but on a 20-min. bed. I mentioned this to the girl and she just kind of shrugged. Now, one day later, I'm nice and burned! Grrr . . . . It's not a horrible burn and it will probably fade into a tan, but I'm still very bothered. Shouldn't it be the responsibility of the salon to make sure a newbie tanner doesn't get burned? It's not like I want to sue or anything (probably couldn't anyway :)); it just doesn't seem right. |

I didn't feel like I was burning at the time. I didn't even get warm until right before it shut off. Plus, I couldn't tell how long I'd been in there while I was in the bed. Also, what I told her I was that I was either Type III or Type IV and that I hadn't been in the sun in a long time. . . . |

If you are white, you will appear "burnt" or pink cause you are so white it stands out more. When you are to the next phase of brown, you won't notice the pink as much. It'll be more of a flush. Then a brown reddish. But it's all the same. Your body is just reacting to the UVB. UVB hits skin, skin alerts body to flood the area with blood to get the tanning process going. NOW, when you go to the beach or pulled a 15min on your white skin that's where you'll get your burn. DAYS of pain, REAL tender to the touch. I'm under the assumption that the TV telling you that NO TAN IS A SAFE TAN is getting you more worried than necessary. In fact, a tan is ABSOLUTELY a sign of good health. If you were in bad health you'd be burnt not tanning cause your body isn't capable of protecting itself which it is designed to do. |

It's when I woke up in the night to feed my babies and realized my clothes felt uncomfortable against my skin in the most pink places that I decided I must be burnt. If you say this is normal, then I guess I won't be mad anymore. :) To be honest, I'm not sure what to believe about the health benefits/risks of tanning. My stepfather is a dermatologist (who must be "evil" according to some pro-tanning stuff I've read ;)) so I hear PLENTY of anti-tanning advice. He did tell me once, however, that because of my olive complexion and the ease with which I tan, that I'm at low risk for skin cancer. I'm still not going to advertise the fact that I'm going tanning to him, though. :) My personal feeling is that having a moderate tan and avoiding accidental burning is safer than going around lily-white all the time. |

They aren't "evil" it's just that they refuse to use SCIENCE and REALITY to support their claims and that, let's say BOTHERS tanning salons cause we are fingered for something that is in reality the LEAST DANGEROUS of all "cancers" and isn't shown to actually cause cancer but PREVENT it. More people die from misdiagnosis and incorrect prescriptions than the sun every year. Remember, humans are treated only as well as the biggest idiot in the group. As long as that's not you, you'll be ok |
