I can totally understand wanting to save a few bucks. BUT there are 2 things that pay the bills at your salon...the tanning and the lotion. If everyone at your salon bought lotions elsewhere they'd have to crank up the price of tanning, so you'd be paying more regardless.

Here's what I picture for online lotions: Some dirty man doing bad things in the lotion while picturing you naked rubbing it on yourself. Or some wackos could put Nair or Hair dye.

Re: bathing.

Mike i also want you to explain why it is bad to shower afterward.

I am with leosalon - explain please.

I am going to have to shower at some point in time. By your logic after a day in the sun if i run home and shower i wont burn. Just kidding - i do go overboard.

Aimee you should not spend alot of time in the shower whenever you tan - it will dry out your skin. Dry skin doesnt tan as well.

Lets hear it mike?

Re: bathing.

Tanning lotion is supplying vitamins to your skin so it has the most ingredients it needs to get you as dark as possible.

To immediately run home and wash it off is like taking your daily multi vitamin and then puking it up 20min later.

You don't tan when you are in the bed. You get exposed to UV. It's for the next 24 or so hrs that you are in the tanning process.

So, in conclusion, you use tanning lotion before the session to get the skin in prime exposure condition. If you are showering immediately afterwords due to stinky tanning skin, you are using the wrong lotion or now showering beforehand or the tanning bed is nasty or all of the above.

If you do have to shower after you tan, make sure you have an after tan lotion to rehydrate the skin with vitamins.

Also, moisturizer does NOT = after tan lotion. If you are using some garbage with a mineral oil/petroleum base then you are not doing anything but coating your skin with liquid plastic.

Remember, your skin is on a constant 28Day exfoliating cycle. Exposing it to UVB speeds that process up to 5-7days. You are trying to counter this cycle with the "vitamin lotion".

Re: bathing.

The color I get from tanning lotions with cosmetic bronzers added normally takes 4 hours to fully develop. If I shower before that time I'm not receiving the ful benefit of the bronzers. Because I feel gross when I can't shower (especially with lotions that leave worse than average after tan odor) I tend to go tanning in the late evening, come home & get into jammies & shower in the morning. I've never had the lotion/bronzers rub off on my sheets.

As others have said, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Body lotion is more easily absorbed when your skin is still damp from the shower and I also keep a bottle on my nightstand to use at random times. If you don't have someone at your home to help you apply lotion in hard to reach places (ie. your back) you can purchase a lotion applicator designed to reach those places at your tanning salon - I have two, one in my tanning bag for applying tanning lotion at the salon & one in my nightstand for moisturizer .

One last thing, make sure to check the ingredient list on your moisturizer to make sure it doesn't contain mineral oil which is NOT good for your skin. You'll find it in alot of "bargain" lotions as mineral oil is very cheap for manufacturers to purchase and use. Two lotions I love are Body Drench's SunSplashed Mango (smells awesome!) athough their whole line is good, and Tan Inc's Brown Sugar lotion which contains bronzers. Both are available through salons only & if your salon doesn't carry a particular fragrance you want it you can ask them to order it for you, thats what I've done in the past for my Brown Sugar moisturizer .

Happy Tanning!
