I recently wen to the derm and he told me (without much examination at all) that my little white spots on my arms and sholders were permanent damage. I think its weird because ive only been tan once and that was last year. I didnt roast myself or anything, i did it in moderation because i went to hawaii over break. That is my ONLY tanning experience and im only 15! None of my family members have EVER had this problem and they have spent YEARS tanning out in the sun! I was wondering if this is normal (im a skin type 2) even though i spent all of my younger years being slathered in sunscreen and i never spent to much time out in the sun because of my year around dancing. Please tell me if you think its tinea versicolor or permanent damage! Thanks a ton

Well, i always qualify things by saying "always check w/ your Dr. " but.......unfortunatly many derm.'s (sounds like germs..... ) seem to be more concerned with the almighty dollar, & it benefits them to scare everyone into the "it's perm. damage ! " mindset. It really sounds like tinea versicolor. You said you were a skin type 2 ? What's your heritage ? T.V.Color is more prominent among women of Italian descent and especially if you have shoulder length or longer hair. TVC is actually a fungus usually coming from your hair. Do this.....no matter what try to find an "open-minded" Dr. Don't go to the Derm. next.See what a reg. (younger? ) physician says. In the meantime use a shampoo like Nizoral on your hair 2-3 times a week. Some of my customers have had success by rubbing a small amount of the shampoo over the "white spots " at night and showering off in the A.M.

Thanks for your quick response! Im pretty sure im a type 2. All my dads family has darker olive skin and my mom is a lot fairer, but i am a mix of pretty much everything western european. I have long hair so i think im going to buy some Nizoral and see how that works while i look for a different derm. The one i saw was VERRY insistant about how bad the sun is. So an open-minded derm might be hard to find but im going to look! Thank you sooooo much for your help it deffenitly makes me feel A LOT better!

If this person is not tanning enough to develope a base, would TV be prominent?

I am impressed... that at your age you are aware of your skin type, moderation and the use of sunscreen. If you don’t feel comfortable with your doctor’s conclusion get a 2nd opinion form a another doctor.

I agree with Kay - a second opinion is always a good idea.

And, Neon, TV does show up without a base or dark tan. Before I started tanning again, I was the color of Casper and you could still see my spots (they were slightly pink, but still there). So, with even the slightest bit of a tan, you would be able to see them.

Re: tinea versicolor or permanent damage?

You could be experiencing something because your skin just doesn't have the same kind of resistance to sunlight as the rest of the family. Keep using your sun block. You don't have much to worry about just yet, but in a few years you'll have to start using something that will help keep your skin young looking. Tanning can cause wrinkles and discolorations, so you will need a cleanser or moisturizer that will help build up the collagen in the skin. Again, the best way to prevent skin problems from appearing early on in life is to avoid direct sunlight and use sunscreens with SPF's 15 or higher.
