I am definately not an expert, but I can tell you what we do. We pretty much make it mandatory LOL. Not really, but we explain the benefits of keeping "hydrated" so they keep their tan longer. Just explain about skin shedding and the tan going with it. It makes sense to most peeps and they buy it. Also, someone mentioned a sale where if they buy a lotion at regular price, the second lotion (moisturizer) is half price. Get them using it, and they won't want to be without it. Never had much luck with moisturizers here either, brought in some Waiheke Gold Cool Beans, seems like nice stuff, smells good too.

We did a couple of promotions last year that really helped us sell moisturizer the rest of the year. One month the special was buy any $50 or more bottle of Devoted Creations and get a free bottle of Savior. The next month we did the same with DS. We sold a lot more moistuizer at full price rest of the year than we normally would have. Next month we are going to offer 50% off any moisturizer with the purchase of any lotion over $40.

Our salon also promotes the benefits of hydration. We have a special (on-going) that gives them a free bottle of moisterizer when they buy a lotion over $40. We pay around $5 for the moisterizer and sell the lotion for full MSRP. We sell the fact that everyone that comes into our salon should have a lotion and extender.
