Okay,I live in Arkansas and I am very, very fair skinned. I have never tried to tan before and I know nothing about tanning. What products should I use to help me tan? How often should I go out into the sun to tan? Should I use a tanning bed? Should I try fake tanning? What kind of moisturizers or lotions should I use? How long will it take me to start seeing results?

Please help me because I am trying to tan but I don't really know what to do.

First of all, do you tan in the sun. Meaning, do you only burn, or do you eventually tan. If you only burn and then go back to white, no matter what you do you won't tan, indoor or outdoor. In that case I highly recommend a spray tan, they look just as natural as a UV tan. If you are planning on tanning outdoors make sure you start with using an SPF. There is a recent study that came out to use SPF's with Titatium Dioxide. They are very heeling for the skin. I also recommend anything that has any kind of anti-oxidant. Tanning produces a lot of free radical damage to your body and skin and anti-oxidants help combat that damage. As for tanning lotions, that can be a matter of opinion. I use Designer skin indoor and outdoor. When using a lotion outdoor though you need to be careful that your skin is typed for the lotion you are using. Again, if you aren't tan start with a higher SPF outdoors.

If you are tanning indoor, your tanning salon operator will be able to direct you in the smart ways of tanning indoors.

I have never tried tanning before so I don't know if I will burn or not.

Yes, you will burn if you over expose. Best advice: find an indoor tanning salon that is Smart Tan certified and have them help you select an appropriate accellerator and develop a responsible tanning regime that will help you tan gradually without burning. Good luck.

When a very pale person comes in, first I suggest a light airbrush session to get her some colour then start her in a regular bed at 10 minutes with a very good lotion like John abate or designer skin-with a cooling effect or a bronzer-no hot or tingle yet!! Then gradually work up to 15 mins after a week to two weeks. Then to 20 mins after about 3 weeks. That is obviously tentative to your skin.

Hi, I would suggest spray tanning only. With a package it comes out very economical, and does not damage the skin at all. You might have to have about 3 sessions to build up a tan, but once your skin gets used to solution, it will hold the tan nicely for up to 2 weeks. Check out www.best-spray-tan-guide.com for tips on spray tannin. I have spray tanned only for a year now, and am very happy with results.

10 minutes is very high for a new, fair skinned tanner to start. I've seen one person get very red when one of my employees made the same mistake, and she's been retrained on following exposure charts. As mentioned, go to a salon Smart Tan certified. Look at the bed's exterior and make sure they're very close to following the exposure (e.g. if you truly haven't tanned, and it's a 20 minute bed, a fair skinned person is going to be about 3-5 minutes).

For spray tanning, it really depends upon your goals. If it's to get a tan for some outside fun later, UV. If it's for the cosmetic appeal of a golden tan only, then the spray makes sense.

After care moisturizers will help your tan last longer and in certain cases anti-aging ingredients (such as Designer Skin's Boutique collection). A trained staff should help you pick.
