Hey
Tanning has other benefits besides getting "dark". Tanning can reduce the appearance of blemishes and can make one seem a bit more toned. So, could we say that blacks can find benefit (like the "sun glow") in tanning?

I believe I remember reading that the FCC will not allow us to advertise any benificial effects of indoor tanning. Except for getting "dark". Im not 100% sure but I think thats correct.

Loop holes. Talk about the benefits of sun exposure and never once reference a tanning bed.

I agree, we discuss the benefits of the sun and then add that the beds emit UV rays, the same as the sun does.

We have several African-American or other dark skinned people that tan to even out their skin tone and also for other benefits of UV exposure.

We also talk about the benefits of sunlight. I have placed some articles of Dr. Holick's UV advantage where he talks about the need for sunlight and some of the health concerns that are benefited by moderate sun exposure. It works out great. While clients are waiting they pick up the article and I have a couple of copies out there for them to take. It's great the information spreads like fires and people have started to ask questions regarding this.

Remember Teresa, the beds emit UV rays but they are "filtered" unlike the sun. Not necessarily better, but they usually get the idea.

Seeing as African-American skin can burn,I think tanning, especially before a vacation, to help prevent sunburn, is not a bad idea at all...just my opinion.

OK. I have had several african-american ladies this week ask me about spray tanning . Do they make a really dark solution for dark skin?
I also have several african-american clients that tan on a regular basis.
I have read the opinion that indoor UV light helps their skin absorb more Vitamin D, which is hindered by the dark pigment of the skin. Statistically, African Americans are afflicted with a higher rate of Rickets than the general population, which can be caused by a Vitamin D deficiency during pre-natal growth. I have also read that Vitamin D deficiency it theorized to contribute to the cause of MS, depression, schizofrenia (sp) among other diseases, with a higher rate in the Pacific Northwest (USA) due to lack of sunlight or UV exposure. Interesting Stuff! I like River_Brat's idea of putting info in the lobby to educate the tanners! Is the book worth buying?

we have quite a few black clients - one of my best friends tans in the summer, as his one arm that is on the driver side gets darker from the sun - he comes in to 'even out'

I bought some clinique self tanner & the lady who sodl it to me was black, medium skinned - she was using it herself as well (DHA product) to give her face more color . . .
