Benzoyl Peroxide

Hi, Ive just resently started taning (2 times so far), still working on my base, and I just have a quick few skin care questions.

- I use a 10% Benzoyl Peroxide wash to help with acne about 6-7 hours before I go taning would there still be any on my skin by then? should I do anything to make sure there isnt?


- and I was wondering if the long term use of Benzoyl Peroxide could make it harder to initially get a tan. thanks for your time and any info -----vosab

Try to think of acne prevention as one goal: keeping your pores open. You'll have to follow several steps every day for the best results:

Wash your face twice a day, and especially after sports or other sweaty or dirty activity. Don't use a harsh detergent or very drying, abrasive soap.
Gentle cleansing with a soft washcloth and mild facial soap is best. The purpose is to gently remove oil, dirt, and bacteria from the pores; scrubbing off a few layers of skin won't help and causes more damage.
Use water-based cosmetics only. Read make-up labels. Oil-based products (containing lanolin, mineral oil, or cocoa butter) plug up pores and worsen acne. After you finish removing make-up, be sure to wash your face as described above.
Avoid head bands, chin straps, and other athletic gear. They may cause or worsen your acne just by skin contact. Environments with lots of dirt or oil in the air (machine shops, commercial kitchens) will also coat exposed skin and plug your pores. Although some individuals may get "breakouts" with certain foods, it's a myth that chocolate, caffeine, or greasy foods should generally be avoided.

When applying anti-acne drugs to the skin, be careful not to get the medicine in the eyes, mouth, or inside of the nose. Do not put the medicine on skin that is wind burned, sunburned, or irritated, and do not apply it to open wounds.

It is advisable to keep your face out of the sun (tanning bed or outside) anytime you are having any kind of treatments. The BP will dry the skin and tanning will further dry it. The skin on the face, neck and chest is the most delicate skin on the body and should be treated a little more carefully to prevent premature aging and wrinkling. My suggestion would be to cover your face most, if not all, of the time you are tanning. I no longer tan my face because of microdermabrasion treatments and chemical peels plus the products I use in between treatments. Instead, I use a sunless product on my face 2 or 3 times a week to keep the color even with my other skin. Your salon probably has some of these at a reasonable cost. If you are young you will be glad later that you took care of your skin before it ages. I wish I had been more careful with mine.

Wow, Ive been using Oxy (Benzoyl Peroxide cream) for well over a year now, maybe I should go talk to a dermatoligest see what he says about it.

Sorry one more thing.. Does Benzoyl Peroxide age skin? If It does I really need to switch washes asap

I would say you should check with a derm. I am definitely not an expert and would hate to tell you the wrong thing. Since this is a product you are buying yourself and not from a doc, I would wonder if it is really 10% solution . I have emailed a friend, who is much more knowledgeable in skin care than I am, with your question. I will let you know when I hear from her.

Less is more with facial skin care. I find that having 3 or so to go between is the best bet. You never get build up from one face wash. NOXEMA is the WORST by far. DO NOT USE THIS CRAP. The safer bets are: Aveeno, Biore, JA Face Wash.

Forget the derms. They just give you what makes the most money and your face the reddest.

Benzoyl Peroxide and Premature Skin Aging: Benzoyl peroxide creates free radicals in the skin and is known to cause premature skin aging. Damage is determined by the concentration of benzoyl peroxide and the frequency of use. It has also been associated with increased risks of skin cancer (but then what isn't these days). In 1995 the FDA issued warnings regarding the use of benzoyl peroxide and changed its status from safe to uncertain.

Because BP generates free radicals it interferes with and slows the healing process. The red and brown marks that are a part of the acne healing process may last weeks longer when BP is a regular part of the daily regimen.

BP has been linked to cancer for a number of years and many research journal entries state "benzoyl peroxide is a free radical-generating skin tumor promoting agent." Performing a word search of the words "benzoyl peroxide cancer" in PubMed in the National Library of Medicine produces 102 articles from medical publications dealing with research aspects of BP and cancer. About two-thirds of the research supports linkage between BP and skin cancer.

"In 1995 the FDA changed benzoyl peroxide from a Category I (safe) to a Category III (safety is uncertain) ingredient and stated this action (56 FR 37622) was based on new information that raised a safety concern regarding benzoyl peroxide as a tumor promoter in mice..." Additionally the FDA charged manufacturers with the responsibility of providing this information to consumers so they could make educated decisions.
