Advice please!

Hi everyone, can anyone help me...?
I stopped going tanning a few months ago because my upper arms had started to look unevenly tanned despite exfoliating, moisturising and using a tanning lotion. Before this I had been tanning for about a year with no problems. Why would it suddenly go patchy? Now I've lost my base tan I've decided to start over and have been back for 2 short sessions so far, but I'm worried about this happening again - any tips? Is it better to use a stand up booth or a bed?
