I had a client come in 3 weeks after having microderm skin abrasion on her face. She asked me if it was now safe to tan.. I told her I was not sure and to check with her doctor,or whoever did the procedure. Any body know? (she also just came back from Mexico, so she already got sun on her face.I did tell her that I would start her with less minutes.

If she's already tanning in the sun, the damage has already been done. I HATE these type of INSTANT GRADIFICATION customers that try to CUT EVERY CORNER based on someone elses opinion. I'd tell her that unless all the red is gone and skin is COMPLETEELY HEALED no tanning.

Thanks engfant... Fortunatly, her face is not red at all. Her pores are really large, but I dot know if that is her normal look. I've never seen her before today,From pulling her card, the last time she was in here was in April and I took over the very end of July..

If she is getting this dermabrasion done - they SHOULD have advised her on her skin care after the proceedure (and for the rest of her lifetime).... too busy billing Blue Cross imho .....

Anyhoooooo----- while I am no Derm (thank the goddess!) I would suggest that your client use an SPF product on her face, neck and upper chest ..... her skin that she is now showing the world is in effect 'baby skin' .... and it needs to have uva & uvb filtered..... I use John Abate's SPF 8 oil spray on mine ~ and don't let them say oils cause a break out---- sh*tty products cause a breakout ---- but this gal should be using a 15 SPF for awile.... 'Oil of Old Lady' Olay daily moisturizer can be gotten with this level.....

Even if she is doing the dermabrassion for Acne - - - it's important that she NOT BURN as this will cause the skin to produce MORE oil in the pores to compensate for the dryness of the burn....

or maybe not

The short answer is stay out of UV while having facial treatments.

Long answer:

While having any kind of facial treatments you should not expose the skin to UV, indoors or out. It is new, fresh skin on the surface that will burn very easily. Also, part of what microdermabrasion does is to help correct sun damage. Seems silly on her part to want to tan her face after spending the money for micro.

I had a series of 10 micro treatments during the past year and now have chemical peels to further correct problems with my skin. I haven't tanned my face in over a year. I use sunless spray or lotion so my face color matches my body. Occasionally, I tan my face for a minute or two at the end of my session but never more than that and not every time. I always wear a facial sunscreen when outdoors. The skin on the face and chest is different structure than the skin on the rest of the body and therefore damaged more easily.

Tanning right after having this done is not safe. You have to remember they have removed a layer of skin, I would suggest she ask them, but I would make her wait at least 48 hours before tanning again.
