My sunspots appeared for the first time this year on the trunk of my body first. Then a little higher, shoulders, and now thighs. I've been told that since the "fungus" originates from my hair most people see them on shoulders and chest and to have the spots first appear not around my hair might mean that I'm getting exposure in the beds. I understand that the UV rays accelerate the spots, spreading them, but the salon that I go to didnt even know what the spots were. I had to tell THEM about the Selsun and Wipe Out and everything else I've learned here. Someone else I know had the exact same thing happen (except only on tummy and chest) and her dermatologist told her to double clean the bed. They do tend to go away and come back, always on the tummy and back. Of course I wont ask the owner's if they clean their beds well, and I've already educated them on the spots and told them what they sould carry (I actually bought 2 products from rival salons), but I'd like to bring a wipe or something with me when I go there. I just bought 2 more months and they have better prices and offer walk-ins and are really nice, so I'd like to continue going. Of course, I went to a "nicer" place for two years and only got a few spots on my shoulders. What, if anything, could I use to clean other than the diluted spray bottle that they leave in the room? My own towel maybe? These spots are REALLY taking over my ENTIRE body now. Also, I only tan once or twice a week (to maintain).

I have very few complaints about "sunspots" in my salon, and I don't think we over clean the beds. As far as UV rays spreading them, that's a bit questionable to me. If a bed were not cleaned properly, you might and I say might, get sunspots on the chest and tummy from someone else, but only if you are lying on your stomach while tanning. Personally I have never seen anyone with "sunspots" at the hairline.

The fungus infection Tinea versicolor (a.k.a. "Sun Spots") is caused by a yeast produced by our oil glands.
IT IS NOT CAUSED BY UVR OR TANNING UNITS OR SUNLIGHT!!!!!!

Chemicals produced by Tinea versicolor "inhibit" the tanning reaction which causes the "white spots" in the afflicted areas..........
We have talked this subject for many times ..do a search and you'll find so much information on it...

Even though...... the Tinea versicolor infection is there...... you can't see it until the surrounding skin gets tan! ......The only "symptom" some people have is a "rash" that may or may not "itch" where the fungus is growing.....

UVR is NOT the cause of Tinea versicolor, also known as....... "Sun Spots... or "white spots".. it is rather the development of the tan MAKES US ABLE to see the Tinea versicolor infection.

How many times have you had a client say that their "white spots" are "getting worse from the tanning???? Well..... folks.... their "white spots" are not "getting worse" the surrounding skin is "getting darker" so that the "white spots" are easier to see! Follow???

Tanning beds... stand-up machines.... UVR DOES NOT CAUSE Tinea versicolor... but it does help the "effect" of the disorder able to be visible.

Copied from another forum, but is good information to help clear up the confusion

I understand now that the rays do not accelerate the condition, just that the tanner skin AROUND the areas make it more VISIBLE- hence the misconception that it "comes from" UVR. It was just mentioned to me by another salon owner that since I do tan on my stomach often and the spots first appeared only on my stomach and other patrons of that place have asked the same, and it would seem to more often appear first one the shoulders or a place closest to hair contact, that I should double clean the bed. Made since since I'd heard the same thing from another fellow patron of my place and the owners didn't really know anything about the spots. Just wondering. I've never questioned the sanitation of the beds. Anything can be picked from ANYWHERE. Just trying to be a little preventative if possible.

Do not ever use anything other than what the salon uses to clean the beds or you may damage the acrylics and have to pay for them. Salons use disinfectants specially made for the tanning bed acrylics. I would be so peeed if anyone used something else on my acrylics & ruined them.

tanning caused tinea versicolor in myself, the fungus infection started due to the HEAT and HUMIDITY (which are both extreme on a tanning bed). although it doesn't happen to everyone, it is very common for those who tan.

SOLERIN,
Are you using a hot tingle lotion? These sometimes can cause white spotting, not to be confused with tinea versicolor.
