Not a skin care topic but definitely beauty related...

Just got back from having the BriteSmile procedure done. It costs roughly twice what you would pay for bleaching trays, but it is done in one 1-hour treatment. Insurance, of course, does not cover the cost.

My only negative comment - if you have sensitive teeth, a low pain tolerance, or are one of those people who is "fussy" about uncomfortable treatments, I would not recommend it.

I was sat in the chair, and the dentist put a contraption in my mouth to hold my lips back. Then he took a "before" picture, holding up a false took in the same shade for comparison. Then he applied a gel to my teeth, hooked the contraption in my mouth up to a small light, and turned the light on for 20 minutes. The light "bonds" the gel. When the 20 minutes were up, he suctioned the gel away and repeated with more gel under the light for another 20 minutes. One more round of suction, gel, and light and I was done - and my teeth are seven "shades" lighter than they were.

I'm pretty impressed at how well it worked for an hour's worth of discomfort.

Highly recommended for those who could use the whitening and are not patient enough or pleased with the results of over-the-counter products.

Be ready to fork over though - I purchased the session on a promotion for $450 (the rep told me the highest is in the LA and NYC areas at $650 a pop), and then if you wish to "upkeep" the treatment at home, they will sell you a kit for $250 which you use once a month for 18 months to keep up the results. However, skip the kit and you'll have to come back in a year.

Do the whitening treatments work only on natural teeth or are they successful on crowns, too? I have, single handedly put at least one of my dentist's kids through college. My entire mouth is crowns and root canals.

I do know bleaching the teeth work on caps and crowns Pam.. but not sure about this type of treatment TaninCa is talking about..

Bleaching will make the teeth very sensitive.. and after the process hot drinks or very cold ones can send you to the roof top with the bang of ohhhhhhhh that hurt....

My boyfriend has been using the Colgate "White Out" one as well and his teeth began to look much whiter in just 3 days and this system only costs $20! Unless your teeth are completely horrible I can't see spending $450 bucks on this...What about the White Strips, anyone try those?

My daughter has. Yes, they do work quite well. But, she stopped using them because of the same sensitivity issue mentioned before. She said it just wasn't worth it. I have read several reviews on the over the counter whitening products and the Crest system gets a thumbs up from every one and is widely considered the best of the bunch. Most think the tray type systems that have been around for a while produce no results and there are mixed reivews on the Colgate stuff. Seems this one is disliked not so much because it doesn't work but because it's more difficult to use.

My ex-boyfriend did the Brite Smile procedure. He was quite pleased with the results. In fact, his dentist told him that he had 13 "shades" lifted from his teeth. I have to admit that it did look pretty impressive.

I have a friend with a uncle who is a dentist. He recommends the White Strips. He said that they work fairly well and are quite inexpensive.
