I recently had a new client come in and she explained to me how whenever she is in the sun or using a tanning bed, she has a problem with "pregnancy mask". I'm aware of what it is because being a mom of two kids I do remember it being mentioned, and how it can be sooooo annoying and unsightly!
However, still being fairly new to the tanning industry I"m not sure what to tell her. She tanned for just a short time today and sure enough, when she got out there it was. A huge blotch on her forhead! She told me that she has always just covered her face with a doubled up towel in the past. She did not have our facials on but still the "mask" came out. I'm thinking of recommending CalTan Illustrous or Matahari's Lustrous. I know these are both great products but not sure if they will remedy or help the situation with "pregnancy mask". Before I do, I want to touch base with all of you and see what your recommendations may be. Can anyone help? Thanks so much! |

Just found this information. If anyone has any suggestions as to what to tell the client, it would be appreciated.
Definition: Melasme is a dark skin discoloration found on sun-exposed areas of the face. Alternative Names: Chloasma; Mask of pregnancy; Pregnancy mask Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Melasma is a very common skin disorder. Though it can affect anyone, young women with brownish skin tones are at greatest risk. Melasma is often associated with the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. It is especially common in pregnant women, women who are taking oral contraceptives ("the pill"), and women taking hormone replacement therapy during menopause. Sun exposure is also a strong risk factor for melasma. It is particularly common in tropical climates. |

I used to get melasma very bad after I had each of my chlldren. It became less apparent the more I tanned & the darker I got.It took about a year after each birth for it to be
completely gone.I imagine everyone is different,thought. |

anyone experiancing this should avoid tanning the face... period.....
I believe we as owners need to know more about the skin when we decide to hang up a certificate calling ourselves a SMART TAN facility! Using an SPF of 20 or higher is important .... I would NOT suggest you have this person use anything that is a tanner for the face.it will only make the pigmentation look worse.... They can even out their color with a face bronzer... C |

Christine I might also add that this skin condition "pregnancy mask" is not a common thing with tanners I would say 1 out of 300 tanners might mention this. We are new to this and simply looking for advice on what to tell her. Now Summerstan was able to adjust to it by tanning more but on the flip side you suggest not tanning the face. What is this recommendation based on? You also suggested a face bronzer. More input would be appropriate don't you think? Now as far as I can remember when taking the Smart Tan Certification course nowhere did the words "pregnancy mask". come up in discussion or course outline. I'm sure it would be nice to take a state board skin course if we had time. Instead I thought it would be quicker to ask questions on TanTalk. We are all here to learn and help right? I'll await your reply.
