Smart Tan..Level 1..Basic Certification..Nineth Edition..
Page 21 "Maybe she's going through some hormonal changes during certain stages of her pregnancy that might cause her to develop a dark patch or light spot somewhere on her skin" Page 80 "Melasma: Dark patches of skin on sun-exposed areas. Although melasma is not gender-specific, more women than men seem to be affected. Women often experience this during pregnancy or while using birth control." This was mentioned in both certifications I took ... We were told that "Melasma was generally referred to as the pregnacy mask"... "Asian skin is particularly susceptible. Other activities or conditions that contribute to the condition include waxing of facial hair (especially above the lip), allergic reactions to skincare products or other inflammations. Above all, sun exposure can worsen the dark pigmentation. " "It is capable of spreading over time if left untreated and worsens on sun exposure. There are many risks and potential causative factors that precipitate and exacerbate this condition" "The most important factor in the development of melasma is exposure to sunlight. Without the strict avoidance of sunlight, potentially successful treatments for melasma are doomed to failure." http://www.melasma.co.uk/whatis.htm http://emedicine.com/derm/topic260.htm |

I stand corrected, though I still don't remember that part lol. Thanks for bringing me up to date TikiTan. Now with that said is it best this tanner doesn't tan at all? She suggested putting two towels over her face and we mentioned about turning the facial off. Any input?

I think it would be best if she consulted a dermatologist or skin care professional for treatment... I would go by their suggestions (having little knowledge of it).. I am not sure if heat plays an active part in this or not.. Something to keep in mind is if she is still planning on tanning w/o professional advice.. Then covering her face with a towel will not be enough uv will penetrate.. She will need to wear spf in contact with uv at all times... From what little I do know about it I would highly recommend seeing a professional for treatment..

go see Tantodays topics in Skin Forum on this condition......
Pigmentation thread.... I feel we as owners are dealing with the largest organ of the body....and we are suggesting time scheduals...we need more education across the board with certifications if we are ever going to get the general public to respect what we are doing in our facilities. I just get so frustrated with the course plans not going more in depth on skin and conditions.......... I was not being rude to you when telling you the name of the facial product..I was just stating a fact of what the name was. Mistakes are made by all of us every single day...we just don't want to make too many in business.........agree? When you get to know me...you'll know I'm just pretty matter of fact in the way I say things....No harm is directed at you.....truly......I am not an *** with people.....I love you guys....... I did re-read what I wrote and My Goodness it did sound harsh.........sorry... it wasn't supose to come out like that...... There are wonderful bronzing powders available for guests who have pigmentation problems.. Caltan makes a great one....buy some powder brushes and put them with the powders on your display and they will sell themselves...... Remember the face is different skin than the rest of the body... Face neck and chest are considered the "facial areas"......... SPF should be used if exposed to UV of any kind when someone has pigmentation issues.... Putting a cloth over the face while tanning doesn't work too well....the UV will go through it..... I just wrote about Pigmentation on TanToday if you want go check it out and see if this can give you more insight... Best to you in your new salon, Again...know it is my hearts desire to see us all work together to make this industry professional and wonderful... C |

one more thing on the masking......
More guest you see may have this condition..when you have a guest come in with make-up that looks a bit thick......ask them if they would like to wash their make-up off.......remember...UV and make-up can create sunspots.... I know some think just because their make-up has an SPF in it it is protecting them....but they need to wash the face before exposure....then apply a facial SPF.........follow? The masking happends usualy in the lip and lower jaw areas and forhead...... girls on the pill can experiance the masking..........Best to ask if you see they are wearng make-up. C |

Christine,
Thank you! Yes we do all make mistakes and it's even harder when you're just starting out. Sometimes we do say things that are not meant to come across the way they do. (Trust me, I"m notorious for that!). I do appreciate you taking the time to help us however. This particular clients wants to tan very badly, but is scared to death because of the pregnancy mask on her forehead. I've seen enough of them to know what they are, but wow! When she showed me hers and how quickly it appeared after she tanned, I was amazed! Understandably, everyone is different. What one person can do, another cannot etc. I just do not want to recommend the wrong thing, yet I don't want to lose her as a client either. I'd like her to know that at least she can trust us and trust what information we give her. And most of all, I want whatever the information may be, to work!!We're not here to be "Just another tanning salon", but to be the best here in our town. Word is quickly getting around about us and our reputation is great! We'd like it to stay that way. People have mentioned many times about how professional we are, and how they are so impressed with what we know about tanning. (Could be I guess, that this small town has never known anything different...lol), But I would like to think it's because we DO know what we're talking about. I will go read the info on TanToday. Thanks for the information and the apology! It means a lot to know that we can all work together, no matter how "silly" the subject may seem, but to be able to help each other without being jumped on or ridiculed is most important. Thanks again! |
